Bush Family Ties to Hitler And Nazis

Warning! this is a very long, while informative post

Dear Mr. Bush,
Your speech on the Knesset floor today was not only a disgrace; it was nothing short of treachery. Worse still, your exploitation of the Holocaust in a country carved out of the wounds of that very crime, in order to strike a low blow at American citizens whose politics differs from your own is unforgivable and unpardonable. Let me remind you, Mr. Bush, of your words today:
"Some seem to believe we should negotiate with terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along," Bush said at Israel's 60th anniversary celebration in Jerusalem.

"We have heard this foolish delusion before," Bush said in remarks to Israel's parliament, the Knesset. "As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: 'Lord, if only I could have talked to Hitler, all of this might have been avoided.' We have an obligation to call this what it is -- the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history."
Well Mr. Bush, the only thing this comment lacked was a mirror and some historical facts. You want to discuss the crimes of Nazis against my family and millions of other families in Europe during World War II? Let me revive a favorite phrase of yours: Bring. It. On!

The All-American Nazi
WASHINGTON -- President Bush's grandfather was a director of a bank seized by the federal government because of its ties to a German industrialist who helped bankroll Adolf Hitler's rise to power, government documents show.

Prescott Bush was one of seven directors of Union Banking Corp. (search), a New York investment bank owned by a bank controlled by the Thyssen family, according to recently declassified National Archives documents reviewed by The Associated Press.
Fritz Thyssen was an early financial supporter of Hitler, whose Nazi party Thyssen believed was preferable to communism.
--snip--
Both Harrimans and Bush were partners in the New York investment firm of Brown Brothers, Harriman and Co., which handled the financial transactions of the bank as well as other financial dealings with several other companies linked to Bank voor Handel that were confiscated by the U.S. government during World War II.
Union Banking was seized by the government in October 1942 under the Trading with the Enemy Act.
Oh, but there is much more too:
The two Holocaust survivors suing the US government and the Bush family for a total of $40bn in compensation claim both materially benefited from Auschwitz slave labour during the second world war, Kurt Julius Goldstein, 87, and Peter Gingold, 85, began a class action in America in 2001, but the case was thrown out by Judge Rosemary Collier on the grounds that the government cannot be held liable under the principle of "state sovereignty".
I cannot think of one Democrat who can boast this kind of lineage. Can you? No, I don't think so. But you can lie brazenly and attack a sitting US Senator on foreign soil by comparing him to Nazi sympathizers? Let us continue down memory lane to help those who applaud you understand just what it is they are celebrating.
The All American Traitor
You family did not stop with supporting fascists and Nazis abroad, did they Mr. Bush? Surely you must know of your grandfather's role in the treasonous plot of 1933 to overthrow democracy in America? Let me remind you.
Grandpa Bush - that is to say, your grandfather - wanted fascism imported into the United States, or as you now call this type of transformation, "exporting democracy." Prescott went so far as to subsidize a coup attempt in order to achieve his dream of a fascist America (see BBC report below):
Document uncovers details of a planned coup in the USA in 1933 by right-wing American businessmen. The coup was aimed at toppling President Franklin D Roosevelt with the help of half-a-million war veterans. The plotters, who were alleged to involve some of the most famous families in America, (owners of Heinz, Birds Eye, Goodtea, Maxwell Hse & George Bush's Grandfather, Prescott) believed that their country should adopt the policies of Hitler and Mussolini to beat the great depression. Mike Thomson investigates why so little is known about this biggest ever peacetime threat to American
In other words, not only was your grandfather a self-professed fascist, he was a Nazi sympathizer and a war profiteer who should have stood trial at the Hague instead of buying his way into the US Senate. He was also a traitor, twice over.
Now clearly the crimes of Prescott Bush are not your fault, Mr. George W. Bush. Let us therefore judge your actions and words on their own merit.
Iraq is your Poland
Your reminiscence today about the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany should have been seen as your own condemnation of your own abhorrent actions against Iraq. The morbid irony of what you said will likely never register with your or your speechwriter. To truly grasp the grotesqueness of what you said requires that you have both a conscience and some understanding of history. We know you possess neither.
I will therefore make your history lesson brief, but to the point. The unprovoked attack on Poland by Germany was a war crime just as your attack against Iraq - based on lies - is a war crime. This is not my opinion. This is not a political attack. This is a fact. Consider the words of the esteemed former chief prosecutor in the Nuremburg trials, Benjamin Ferencz, regarding your war of aggression against Iraq:
"...Prima facie case can be made that the United States is guilty of the supreme crime against humanity, that being an illegal war of aggression against a sovereign nation."
Moreover, your reckless verbiage and partisan pandering using something as tragic and criminal as Germany's war of aggression against Poland is an insult to all victims of those atrocities.
My grandfather's sister and parents were having supper in their Warsaw home when a German bomb erased them from this planet. Your evoking the German atrocities against Poland in order to play dirty politics against Democrats is as offensive to me as if you had pinned a swastika onto your lapel.
Even your own words appear to be penned by Hitler's ghost all the while you imply that Democrats are Nazis and/or terrorists - something you have done over and over. Your lies and Hitler's lies even have the same purpose.
When you, Mr. Bush, said "see in my line of work you got to keep repeating things over and over and over again for the truth to sink in, to kind of catapult the propaganda," were you aware of Adolph Hitler's eerily similar statement? Hitler said "If you tell a big enough lie and tell it frequently enough, it will be believed."
Yet if words alone were your only weapon and words strung together into lies your only crime, you might be seen as simply the loathsome, unethical dilettante and despot that you are. Unfortunately, your crimes are many and so similar to those of the Nazi regime that at times one wonders if you are not yourself reenacting that very history you used today as an insult against a political opponent.
Your very own concentration camps
You ordered the creation of secret camps all over the world and on US territory where you also authorized the torture of countless men, women and children is a violation of the Geneva Conventions, international law, and domestic law. In other words, you authorized war crimes.
We don't know the number of people you have had disappeared, tortured, and possibly murdered. Although we have some idea of what these numbers may be, I doubt the full truth of it all will ever be known.
In 2005, I had a CENTCOM document leaked to me illustrating that since the start of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, more than 70,000 men, women, and children have been detained at one of your various camps Mr. Bush. We don't know what happened to them, if they were tortured, raped, or murdered. What we do know is that less than 2% of those 70,000 had any sort of charge brought against them in a court of law. None of those alleged crimes, by the way, were acts of terrorism. We don't know if that 70,000 figure was the actual and full count of detainees in US custody around the world in 2005. But it is safe to say that in the last 3 years since this document was published, the number of detainees has likely grown.
What we also now know, in great horror, is that at least one of your camps had a crematorium in it, which some of the US soldiers stationed there suspected was used for burning bodies:

"We had some kind of incinerator at the end of our building," Specialist Megan Ambuhl said. "It was this huge circular thing. We just didn't know what was incinerated in there. It could have been people, for all we knew--bodies." Sergeant Davis was not in doubt. "It had bones in it," he said, and he called it the crematorium. "But hey, you're at war," he said. "Suck it up or drive on."
What we also now know is that Dick Cheney and senior members of your administration carried out a plan of torture and abuse that violated international and domestic law with regard to human rights, down to the type of torture tactics that would be used against prisoners in our custody. This plan, we now know, was approved by you.
Has the mirror cracked yet from this much fact or are you still peering into the political sphere hoping to ascribe your own crimes to others? It won't work. It never has and it certainly won't work now. We know far too much about you and yours.
I could continue listing the litany of your crimes, both against the United States and against foreign nations. I won't. We know what you are and what you have done. Having roughly 1,000,000 dead Iraqis under your belt should have shamed you into the parasitic hole you came out of, attaching yourself to the blood of this nation and sucking it dry. Instead, you parade around, the globe-trotting horror show and anti-Semite that you are.

Yes, you are an anti-Semite
Would you say no, you are not an anti-Semite? Consider your own words when you thought no one was keeping score:

"You know what I'm gonna tell those Jews when I get to Israel, don't you Herman?" a then Governor George W. Bush allegedly asked a reporter for the Austin American-Statesman.

When the journalist, Ken Herman, replied that he did not know, Bush reportedly delivered the punch line: "I'm telling 'em they're all going to hell."
Only an anti-Semite would think this type of humor is acceptable. Did you tell the Jews of Israel they were going to hell? No, instead, you told them that American Democrats are Nazi sympathizers and in an act of sheer indecency, the right wing Likud party orchestrated the greatest applause you ever got. For shame!
What this blind adoration finally proves to me is that the right-wing regime that has overtaken Israel cares nothing for its people, its heritage, and the tragic history that they now honor by applauding a man whose family-fortune was built on the bodies of their loved ones. Like their Republican (and Lieberman) counterparts in the United States, Likud does not represent its people, rather, it represents its owners. Likud has traded Israel, its Jews, their heritage and history for the same golden calf purchased and sold by the far-right wing in the United States.
I am ashamed of you Mr. Bush. I am ashamed of those who applauded your political porn played out against the hallowed backdrop of the Holocaust. I am ashamed of those reporters with you, who between them could not muster the moral courage to call you out on your ugly rhetoric and ask you about your own family Nazi ties. You are, sir, the most abhorrent human being of my lifetime. I dare say, in the lifetime of this nation.

FBI to look into anti-Semitic incidents

Members of Congress from Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties sent a letter today to FBI Director Robert Mueller asking the agency to investigate a recent string of anti-Semitic incidents in South Florida.

The effort, organized by U.S. Rep. Ron Klein, D-Boca Raton, was joined by U.S. Reps. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Weston; Tim Mahoney, D-Venus; Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Miami, Lincoln Diaz-Balart, R-Miami; Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Miami; Robert Wexler, D-Delray Beach; Kendrick Meek, D-Miami, and Alcee Hastings, D-Miramar.
A press release from Klein's office reports that the delegation is "greatly concerned about the temporal pattern of these events." The letter asks the FBI Director to "look into these incidents as a potential trend and report to us about ways that you are working with community leaders to find the perpetrators and prevent future incidents."

Stop Florida from damaging another election

A Guest Post

Wed May 14, 2008 at 11:28:40 AM PDT

Dear Friends,
From the 2000 recount, to the debacle over delegates, Florida has a long, painful history of problems during election season.  Who's to blame?  The Republican-Led Florida Legislature.
I am running against the Majority Whip of the Florida House  - the very person that secured the votes that got us into the latest delegate mess.
In the last term, my opponent:
- Voted for legislation that discredits evolution and opens the door to intelligent design in school curriculum.

- Violated a woman's right to privacy by voting to make an ultrasound mandatory prior to exercising a woman's right to choose.

- Supported legislation criminalizing embryonic stem cell research

- Voted specifically to exclude mental and physical disabilities and sexual orientation from enumerated categories of bullying in anti-bullying legislation.

- Voted to change Florida law to allow people to take their guns to work.
We may not all be Florida Democrats, but we all know the story:  Voters disenfranchised and a primary in chaos.
On top of that, back in January, 2004, my opponent won the first election in America using black-box voting machines.  The result – a contested election and a judge, not voters, choosing the winner.
It gets worse: She is also the Florida Co-Chair of the McCain for Florida campaign.
We may be a state in chaos… We may be a Democratic party in chaos… but we will win in November.
Help me remove a key member of the Florida Republican leadership: Click here to lend me your support.

Stop The Spread Of Hate

After she was exposed, Rep. Kern refused to apologize. In fact, she has even appeared on television to repeat her outrageous assertions.

Wrong Way McSame

McCain lost five U.S. Navy aircraft

Navy pilot John Sidney McCain III should have never been allowed to graduate from the U.S. Navy flight school. He was a below average student and a lousy pilot. Had his father and grandfather not been famous four star U.S. Navy admirals, McCain III would have never been allowed in the cockpit of a military aircraft.

His father John S. "Junior" McCain was commander of U.S. forces in Europe later becoming commander of American forces in Vietnam while McCain III was being held prisoner of war. McCain III's grandfather John S. McCain, Sr. commanded naval aviation at the Battle of Okinawa in 1945.
During his relative short stunt on flight status, McCain III lost five U.S. Navy aircraft, four in accidents and one in combat.

Robert Timberg, author of The Nightingale's Song, a book about Annapolis graduates and their tours in Vietnam, wrote that McCain "learned to fly at Pensacola, though his performance was below par, at best good enough to get by. He liked flying, but didn't love it."

McCain III lost jet number one in 1958 when he plunged into Corpus Christi Bay while practicing landings. He was knocked unconscious by the impact coming to as the plane settled to the bottom.

McCain's second crash occurred while he was deployed in the Mediterranean. "Flying too low over the Iberian Peninsula," Timberg wrote, "he took out some power lines [reminiscent of the 1998 incident in which a Marine Corps jet sliced through the cables of a gondola at an Italian ski resort, killing 20] which led to a spate of newspaper stories in which he was predictably identified as the son of an admiral."

McCain's third crash three occurred when he was returning from flying a Navy trainer solo to Philadelphia for an Army-Navy football game.
Timberg reported that McCain radioed, "I've got a flameout" and went through standard relight procedures three times before ejecting at one thousand feet. McCain landed on a deserted beach moments before the plane slammed into a clump of trees.

McCain's fourth aircraft loss occurred July 29, 1967, soon after he was assigned to the USS Forrestal as an A-4 Skyhawk pilot. While seated in the cockpit of his aircraft waiting his turn for takeoff, an accidently fired rocket slammed into McCain's plane. He escaped from the burning aircraft, but the explosions that followed killed 134 sailors, destroyed at least 20 aircraft, and threatened to sink the ship.

McCain's fifth loss happened during his 23rd mission over North Vietnam on Oct. 26, 1967, when McCain's A-4 Skyhawk was shot down by a surface-to-air missile. McCain ejected from the plane breaking both arms and a leg in the process and subsequently parachuted into Truc Bach Lake near Hanoi.
After being drug from the lake, a mob gathered around McCain, spit on him, kicked him and stripped him of his clothing. He was bayoneted in his left foot and his shoulder crushed by a rifle butt. He was then transported to the Hoa Lo Prison, also known as the Hanoi Hilton.
After being periodically slapped around for "three or four days" by his captors who wanted military information, McCain called for an officer on his fourth day of captivity. He told the officer, "O.K., I'll give you military information if you will take me to the hospital." -U.S. News and World Report, May 14, 1973 article written by former POW John McCain

"Demands for military information were accompanied by threats to terminate my medical treatment if I [McCain] did not cooperate. Eventually, I gave them my ship's name and squadron number, and confirmed that my target had been the power plant." Page 193-194, Faith of My Fathers by John McCain.
When the communist learned that McCain's father was Admiral John S. McCain, Jr., the soon-to-be commander of all U.S. Forces in the Pacific, he was rushed to Gai Lam military hospital (U.S. government documents), a medical facility normally unavailable for U.S. POWs.
The communist Vietnamese figured, because POW McCain's father was of such high military rank, that he was of royalty or the governing circle. Thereafter the communist bragged that they had captured "the crown prince."
For 23 combat missions (an estimated 20 hours over enemy territory), the U.S. Navy awarded McCain a Silver Star, a Legion of Merit for Valor, a Distinguished Flying Cross, three Bronze Stars, two Commendation medals plus two Purple Hearts and a dozen service medals.

"McCain had roughly 20 hours in combat," explains Bill Bell, a veteran of Vietnam and former chief of the U.S. Office for POW/MIA Affairs -- the first official U.S. representative in Vietnam since the 1973 fall of Saigon. "Since McCain got 28 medals," Bell continues, "that equals out to about a medal-and-a-half for each hour he spent in combat. There were infantry guys -- grunts on the ground -- who had more than 7,000 hours in combat and I can tell you that there were times and situations where I'm sure a prison cell would have looked pretty good to them by comparison. The question really is how many guys got that number of medals for not being shot down."
For years, McCain has been an unchecked master at manipulating an overly friendly and biased news media. The former POW turned Congressman, turned U.S. Senator, has managed to gloss over his failures as a pilot and collaborations with the enemy by exaggerating his military service and lying about his feats of heroism.

McCain has sprouted a halo and wings to become America's POW-hero presidential candidate

Why Florida Matters

Posted At NoQuarter

Many people are asking. "Why isn't Hillary leaving the race?" Or, "Isn't the math prohibitive?" Well, the answer is given quite simply by Karl Rove. Now Karl may be a lot of things, but he is not stupid and he knows politics and elections. Unlike Hillary and her surrogates in the Democratic party, he does not have to say, "either candidate can win the general but Hillary is stronger." 2209 He can tell the unvarnished version which is that Hillary wins against McCain and Barack loses. So it's simple, a vote for Barack in the primary is tantamount to a vote for McCain in the general. (The chart to the right reflects Karl's analysis that Nebraska and North Dakota will end up in the Republican column.) It's very striking to me that the Democratic fortunes in November are completely reversed if we are foolish enough to nominate Barack. I'm sure this is why many superdelegates are sticking with Hillary or are still undecided. No one wants four or eight more years of a Republican in the White House.
I've posted his discussion by Fox News about this and about the Dems problem with Florida.
UPDATE: Please take a look at the analysis by Mr. X who writes that "His [Karl's] numbers match almost exactly what I have. There is almost ZERO way Obama can win and it's almost impossible for Hillary to lose in the GE." )
Over a dozen members of Congress from swing states had this to say in a letter they sent to their colleagues today:
Pennsylvania was not just a victory for Hillary Clinton. It was also a wake- up call for superdelegates, forcing us to ask ourselves two essential questions:

Craig Crawford asks the obvious question:
If Democratic superdelegates truly want Hillary Rodham Clinton to quit the nomination race, why don't they just publicly endorse Barack Obama and get it over with? There are more than enough of them to make up the difference needed to give him the winning majority.
Until she officially loses, Clinton has no reason to drop out. And if this fight goes all the way to the convention floor because Obama doesn't have the required number of votes on record to formally claim the nomination, the blame falls on wimpy superdelegates -- not her.

RE: Tie-Breaker

In April, Barack Obama called Indiana a 'tie-breaker' for the Democratic nominating process: "You know, Sen. Clinton is more favored in Pennsylvania and I'm right now a little more favored in North Carolina, so Indiana right now may end up being the tiebreaker. So we want to work very hard in Indiana."

At the time, Senator Obama's comments seemed to be part of an elaborate plan to lower expectations for the Indiana contest. After all, roughly 20% of Indiana Democratic primary voters have been exposed to Senator Obama for years because they live within the Chicago media market. He's never lost a state that borders his home-state of Illinois.
The fact that Indiana was an open primary – Republicans and independents can vote in the Democratic contest – also augured well for Senator Obama. He has regularly argued that he should be nominated because he "appeal[s] to Republicans and Independents in a way that none of the other nominees can." Read the rest

SINE DIE STATEMENT BY SENATE DEMOCRATIC LEADER STEVEN GELLER

Senate Democratic Leader Steven A. Geller ( D-Cooper City ) on Friday issued the following statement on the conclusion of the 2008 Legislative Session:

"As I predicted at the start of the session, the one single issue that sucked all of the oxygen out of the room this year was the budget.

"While the decline of our economy and our housing market certainly take a lot of the blame for the cuts we were forced to make, I'm very disappointed that the Legislature chose to take a head-in-the- sand approach when it came to ways to avert the greatest pain these cuts are going to inflict on the people of Florida .

"We had an opportunity to make real choices this session. And we did. But they were all the wrong ones.

"Democrats in the Senate offered a myriad of ways to raise additional revenue without raising taxes on our residents. We repeatedly reminded our colleagues that there was a select group of large, out of state corporations tapping our services without paying for them, driving up our taxes to pay for their free ride.

"The reluctance to close these loopholes will come back to haunt us. Sooner or later, Floridians stuck with $4.00 a gallon gasoline, $5.00 a gallon milk, and stubbornly high property taxes are going to demand accountability and equity on the tax paying field.

"I am heartened that Senate Democrats played a lead role in highlighting the plight of so many of our residents desperate for medical care who came dangerously close to losing it. The Medically Needy program is now funded thanks in large part to an outraged chorus of voices from our Caucus. So too, the many jobs in Corrections and Probation once targeted for layoff, but salvaged after our protests grew louder.

"By any accounting, this was an extremely tight budget crafted in extremely tight economic times. I salute the leadership of President Ken Pruitt who, true to his word when he began his presidency, listened to the voice of the people, not just the chosen few. His policy of inclusion, I believe, helped blunt the more drastic measures that Floridians otherwise would have faced.
The bipartisan spirit that has, thus far, embraced this chamber also led to the defeat of one of the more egregious attempts by some to force their views and their mandates where they do not belong. The defeat of the sonogram legislation was a highlight of this session.

We also saw the first step in instituting automatic compensation for those wrongfully imprisoned, the passage of legislation throwing a much needed lifeline to inner city children in Liberty City , and the recognition that children with autism can be mainstreamed if treated early. The Senate sent a very clear message on that issue which the House – in the final moments of the 2008 Legislative Session - finally heeded.

Finally, we saw the passage of a Democratic initiative designed to jumpstart the economy by requiring the portion of state pension funds already invested elsewhere, to be diverted to high-tech Florida-based companies.

Putting a priority on investing in Florida is only one half of the equation. The other half is protecting the residents and the businesses here that have a vested interest in our state. This session, the numbers just aren't adding up."

2008 LEGISLATIVE SESSION: WRAPUP

The 2008 legislative session will be remembered as the session for all pain and no gain. Truck paraphernalia, guns to work and wedge issues were at the forefront while the real challenges Floridians face today were ignored. The issues of the day were unaddressed at the close of session with Floridians left with an unstable insurance market, an unfair property tax system, a system of public education that leaves millions of children behind and a health safety net about to rupture.

Democratic Leader Dan Gelber (D-Miami Beach): "We are home to the worst high school graduation rate in the nation. One in five children lacks health insurance. Homeowners are paying way more than their fair share in property taxes and are faced with property insurance rates that are obscene. Family incomes have flat lined over the last decade, and declining sales tax revenues have caused multi-billion dollar deficits in our already stretched and tattered state budget.

"So what did we spend sixty days talking about? Truck ornaments, guns to work and social wedge issues were at the forefront while the problems on the minds of so many Floridians were silent. All pain, no gain is the motto of this session. Floridians will continue to feel pain and their cries for help will only get louder."

Democratic Leader Pro Tempore Joyce Cusack (D-Deland): "Our families are hurting and we have failed to address the concerns of our constituents. The responsibility to make life a little easier for Floridians was not achieved this legislative session. The hardest calls I get from constituents are the ones who share their story of losing their job, the ones who have had their house foreclosed because they were preyed upon or the calls from families wanting healthcare for their children, but are unable to obtain it. This legislature has done nothing to address these concerns. It pains me that we spent hours on legislation that does not improve the lives of Floridians instead of focusing our attention on the real challenges our families confront day in and day out."

Sensible, thoughtful and responsible tax relief and reform were out of sight this legislative session. The inactions of the Republican Legislature to address the gross inequities in the property tax structure leaves new homeowners, middle-class families and small businesses with a greater burden of property taxes.

State Rep. Luis Garcia (D-Miami) said, "New homeowners and small businesses will continue to be clobbered with a greater tax burden because my colleagues across the aisle chose politically motivated plans rather than work united with Gov. Crist and the Senate to reform the system. I supported tax relief that came before the House, but we all knew it was not going to be taken up in the Senate. If politics would have been put aside, we could have passed meaningful tax relief this year. It's a shame that another year will go by before tax fairness can be addressed."

State Rep. Keith Fitzgerald (D-Sarasota) said, "We must change our tax system that negatively impacts middle-class families. Unfortunately, legislation I filed that would have given relief to so many was ignored this year. It is important that partisan plays are put aside next year so we can achieve what our constituents our expecting, restoring fairness to our tax system. We must work together to do what's right for the people of our state."

Property insurance relief will remain on the minds of Floridians since the Republican Legislature failed to include rate relief in the sweeping insurance reforms that passed earlier in the week. Though the consumer friendly measures were unanimously approved by the Legislature, House Democrats voiced their concern over the lack of relief to Floridians.
State Rep. Priscilla Taylor (D-Riviera Beach) "This legislation that passed this session was a positive step for consumers, but it is just a step.  In order to move in the direction of a truly competitive market that would drive down rates, we need to have a real discussion about restructuring the way that companies provide insurance in Florida. We need outside the box thinking so we can achieve a healthily and stable market that serves the people well. As we look towards next session, reforming the system to permanently lower rates should be our top priority."
Representative Janet Long (D-Seminole) : "The consumer friendly measures that passed this week are exciting and will put in place needed reforms. However, these measures alone will not lower rates in our state. Families are facing tough economic challenges and insurance premiums are swallowing a large portion of family budgets. Unfortunately, the legislation that passed left out an important component, rate relief. We must start the work early next year by working together to enact reforms that will change the broken system."
The Republican prepared budget that cuts critical services in education, healthcare and public safety. The budget will hurt state employees in many regards, especially by providing no cost of living increase for the second year in a row. The bad news of the budget will be felt across the state, especially when Floridians get pink slips as a result of the budget passed this afternoon. The bad news will hit families across the state at a time when the United States Bureau of Labor announced that Florida's unemployment rate jumped from 3.7 percent to an alarming 4.9 percent.  Florida's unemployment rate could surpass the national average of 5.1 percent if this budget takes effect

"Representative Martin Kiar (D-Davie): "As Floridians learn more about the budget put together by the Republican legislature, they will be outraged. Whether it is a parent explaining to their child why they got rejected from state universities though they worked hard in high school or a senior citizen in nursing home care learning about cuts to services they receive today, Floridians will be shocked by the priorities and decisions of this Republican legislature. The budget prepared by Republicans will throw our state into further recession and make it harder for our families to get the critical services they need during times of economic crisis."

Representative Perry Thurston (D-Fort Lauderdale): "Parents will be overwhelmed by the disastrous cuts school districts will have to make to balance their budget. Floridians will be shocked by the cuts to the courts system as they absorb deep cuts that will make it harder for the state's criminal justice system to address the increase in crime. It is unfortunate that prevention and education programs for our juveniles were slashed while massive prison construction contracts remain intact. These policy decisions made in this budget will come to light. Not today, not tomorrow, but in the future, we will feel the effects of ignoring prevention and education programs."

Representative Bill Heller (D-St. Petersburg): "We are forcing our best and brightest university professors to flea our state because of actions by the Republican Legislature. The budget passed this year continues to take millions of dollars from our institutions of higher education thus impeding our ability to attract a viable workforce and secure a knowledge based economy. Governor Crist, in his State of the State address, challenged this legislature to invest in our state universities and community colleges. This is hardly an investment. "
Leader Designated Franklin Sands (D-Weston) added, "Floridians have been clear in their message that they are tired of rank partisanship, tired of empty rhetoric, tired of politicians using social issues to drive wedges and tired of their elected officials failing to solve the real problems facing their state and their nation."

If the super delegates are looking at electability: Clinton Wins Hands Down

Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, said in a news release:

"If the super delegates are looking at electability, these results could be a shot in the arm for Senator Clinton. No one has won the White House since 1960 without carrying two of these three swing states, Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania. And she clearly is running much better against Senator McCain than is Senator Obama, at least for now.
"There is no indication that Obama's problems with white working class Democrats in the Ohio and Pennsylvania primaries have gone away.
"Many voters cite trustworthiness as the most important quality they want in a candidate. Clinton is found wanting in that department, but still does best in the matchups. She wins because she is seen as a strong leader who cares about people and can improve the economy.
"McCain's age is a significant problem in the minds of voters as are his ties to President George W. Bush. He is seen as the least able to fix the economy and bring about change. The data indicates he needs to continue to try and put some distance between himself and President Bush, whose job approval ratings remain awful."
From April 23 - 29, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,411 Florida voters. The results have a margin of error of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points.
Other findingsl
Demographics
- Facing McCain in November, Clinton leads 54 - 37 percent among women, while he gets 45 percent of men to her 43 percent. They tie 45 - 45 percent among white voters, while she leads 80 - 11 percent among black voters.
- In an Obama-McCain matchup, men back McCain 46 - 42 percent, while women split, with 44 percent for Obama and 42 percent for McCain. The Republican leads among white voters 50 - 36 percent, while the Democrat leads among black voters 83 - 8 percent.
Favorability
- Clinton has a 49 - 40 percent favorability rating. That means 49 percent have a favorable view and 40 percent unfavorable. Obama is 47 percent - 36 percent for Obama and McCain is 51 - 32 percent.
Economy- The economy is the most important issue in their vote, 50 percent of Florida voters say, with 22 percent who list the war in Iraq and 10 percent who list health care.
- If Clinton is elected, 44 percent say the economy will get better. If Obama is elected, 38 percent say the economy will get better. Only 24 percent say the economy will improve under McCain.
Candidate Characteristics
- The most important quality they want in a candidate is strong leadership, 29 percent of voters say, while 27 percent want someone trustworthy and 23 percent want someone competent.
- McCain is a strong leader, 73 percent of the voters say, while 20 percent consider him not a strong leader. The leadership split is 69 - 27 percent for Clinton and 58 - 30 percent for Obama. McCain also leads on the trustworthy measure 68 - 22 percent, with 58 - 28 percent saying Obama is trustworthy, and Clinton split at 46 - 46 percent.
- A total of 43 percent of Florida voters say a candidate's age is "very important" or "somewhat important."
"In Florida, with its large number of senior citizens, age is an issue. That could hurt Senator McCain. These same voters are less concerned with gender or race, which would impact Senator Clinton or Senator Obama. But it may well be that people are more reluctant to concede they're making decisions based on a candidate's race or sex," Brown said.
