CHECK YOUR SMOKE ALARMS WHEN YOU CHANGE THE CLOCKS THIS WEEKEND

Image result for daylight savings time ends

Daylight Savings Time Ends 2 A.M. This Sunday

Research tells us most fatal fires occur at night. Every home needs working smoke alarms to provide an early warning for occupants to escape alive. The National Fire Protection Association reports that 71 percent of smoke alarms which failed to operate had missing, disconnected or dead batteries.
Take an important step to keep you and your family safe. Install smoke alarms in all sleeping rooms and hallways that lead to sleeping areas on each additional level of your home. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper installation.
"Prepare and practice an escape plan. Crawl low under smoke. Plan where to meet outside. Once you're out, stay out. Remember, almost every day a smoke alarm saves lives," Sheriff Scott Israel said.
A potential life-saving activity is this: remember to check your smoke alarms and change the batteries this weekend when you change your clocks.

Al Franken will join Nelson at the home of former Florida CFO and candidate for Governor Alex Sink on Saturday, November 18

The three-term Democrat will have a well-known colleague come to Florida to help him raise money to win a fourth. Minnesota’s Al Franken will join Nelson at the home of former Florida CFO and candidate for Governor Alex Sink on Saturday, November 18.
Franken, who has represented Minnesota in the Senate since 2009, is also well-known as a comic actor, writer and liberal political activist. It is appropriate the event will be held on Saturday since he was a longtime writer and performer on NBC’s Saturday Night Live.
Sen. Al Franken will be fundraising for Bill Nelson in Thonotosassa Nov. 18.
He has also hosted The Al Franken Show, a nationally syndicated, political radio talk show. Franken also is the author of six books, four of which were political satires blasting conservatives.
First elected in 2008 in a tight victory over incumbent Republican Norm Coleman — with a recount that lasted months — Franken won re-election in 2014.
Suggested donation to the event is $250; to co-host the reception is $1,000, $2,700 to host and $5,400 to chair.

Senator Rubio May Vote NO on Tax Cuts For The Rich

Rubio: 'No' vote on tax cuts without Child Tax Credit increase
With a draft tax cuts for the wealthy bill due to be rolled out on Wednesday, Florida’s junior senator has laid down his marker. To earn his vote, the final package must include an expansion of the Child Tax Credit.
Rubio is working with Utah Republican Sen. Mike Lee to raise the credit from $500 to $2,000 per child to prevent what they say would be a tax increase on working families. They believe their issue is good policy along with good politics.
“You can’t just produce a tax cut bill in which all of the benefit accrues to the people who can hire lobbyists at the expense of the people we should actually be helping,” Rubio told a group of reporters last week.
Marco Rubio with Sen. Mike Lee of Utah, who vows to vote 'no' on any tax cuts that does not include an increase in the child tax credit.
Rubio has said for two weeks that tax reform will not pass without adding the extra benefits for middle and lower-income families. Last week, he took it a step further.
“I’m not going to vote for an increase on the middle class,” he told reporters. “But we’re not going to get to that point. We’re not that crazy around here to think that we’re going to raise taxes on the middle class.”
The Constitution requires all tax bills to originate in the House of Representatives, but the Senate can amend what passes the House. With Wednesday’s launch, proponents and opponents of the GOP tax reform push will have the rest of the week to go back and forth on cable news networks.
Debate on the tax bill is set to begin in the House Ways and Means Committee on November 6. Chaired by Texas Republican Kevin Brady, the committee includes Florida Republicans Vern Buchananof Sarasota and Carlos Curbelo of Kendall.

Florida Dems response to Manafort indictment

On Monday, Special Counsel Robert Mueller announced a 12-count indictment against former Donald Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and Manafort’s longtime associate, Rick Gates. A campaign foreign policy adviser, George Papadopoulos, pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about contacts with an individual with ties to Russia.
It was the event many had feared or had been waiting for, depending on the political point of view. There was something for both sides to use in making their case, but those looking for the weapon that would undermine Trump or, at the extreme lead to impeachment, did not get what they were seeking.
Florida's congressional delegation offered a 'proportional response' to the indictments against former Donald Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort.
Had this turned out to be the bombshell for which some had hoped, the response from Democrats — and some Republicans — in the Florida delegation would have been quick and direct. Instead, the investigation lives for another day, which may well bring more charges of wrongdoing.
More than 8 hours after the indictments were announced, the few Florida Democrats who commented were careful with their remarks. Most raised a direct or implicit warning to Trump not to fire Mueller or otherwise interfere.
“These are very serious charges and show why we must be patient about the investigation,” said Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson.
“I expect this will be just the tip of the iceberg,” tweeted Alcee Hastings of Miramar. “@realdonaldtrump: Do not interfere with the Special Counsel’s independent investigation.”

“Instead of moaning about @HillaryClinton, the White House needs to worry about who’s next,” tweeted Frederica Wilson of Miami Gardens.
“As the criminal probe escalates, Congress must signal that we will not tolerate any interference by the President or his Administration,” said Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Weston and former chair of the DNC.

Nelson seeks more Medicaid help for Puerto Rico

Bill Nelson filed legislation to help an estimated 400,000 low-income seniors living in Puerto Rico by lifting the cap on Medicare funding.
Florida’s senior senator is asking the federal government to lift the current cap on Medicaid funding in Puerto Rico to help those on the devastated island receive necessary medical care. On Friday, he joined with four of his Democratic Senate colleagues to file legislation that would prevent Puerto Rico’s Medicaid funds from running out.
“The people of Puerto Rico need our help,” Nelson said in a statement. “As we work to help them recover and rebuild in the aftermath of this devastating disaster, we also have to look forward to the future and help them avert what could be a serious health care crisis if nothing is done.”
The bill would also provide prescription drug subsidies for low-income senior citizens in Puerto Rico.
Joining Nelson as co-sponsors for the bill was Bob Menendez and Cory Booker from New Jersey, Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York.

Florida Democrats hope Donald Trump factor boosts them in 2018” via Brendan Farrington of The Associated Press – The president was mentioned often as the Florida Democratic Party held its biennial convention and many said he will be the reason Democrats could break more than two decades of futility when voters choose a new governor, three new Cabinet members and decide whether to keep Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson in office. "People are coming out of the woodwork like never before," said Palm Beach County Democratic Chairwoman Terrie Rizzo. "We're seeing people who want to get involved, who want to make a difference, who are tired of what's going on and what they see." While Florida Democrats have had a problem with turnout in non-presidential years - a reason why they've had a miserable showing in statewide races - many in the party say that will change in the Trump era.
"R. David Walker Candidate for Florida Commissioner Of Agriculture Makes huge splash at Florida Conference

R. David Walker a newcomer to politics made his debut during the Florida Democrats 2017  Conference

Democrats look for momentum going into 2018 elections” via Lloyd Dunkelberger of the News Service of Florida – Buoyed by a win in a special election for a state Senate seat last month, Florida Democrats used a three-day party conference to prepare plans for the critical 2018 election year when they hope to retain a U.S. Senate seat and reclaim the governor's mansion. Sen. Annette Taddeo's victory in a special election for Miami-Dade County's Senate District 40 … is being taken as a sign by Democrats that they can compete in a non-presidential election year when Democratic turnout has historically lagged. Former state Sen. Jeremy Ring, a Broward County Democrat who is running for Chief Financial Officer, said the Senate win has helped counter some of the traditional midterm “apathy” the party has faced in past elections. “The Taddeo race for the first time since I have been in Florida demonstrated enthusiasm in the midterms,” Ring said. One of the factors in the race was the ability of Democrats to tie Taddeo's Republican opponent, former state Rep. Jose Felix Diaz, to President Donald Trump.
Rick Scott targeted at Democratic candidates forum in Orlando” via Marc Caputo of POLITICO Florida – By nature, the event wasn’t a debate where candidates pointed out differences with each other and disagreed. Instead, the forum echoed the Florida Democratic Party’s theme of unity at its three-day party convention at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort. [AndrewGillum challenged his opponents to six debates, but none agreed. The differences between the three were apparent more in their styles and backgrounds. Gillum, the most gifted orator, elicited more applause and emphasized the problems of intergenerational poverty and the need to expand Medicaid because “health care is a right.” [ChrisKing, a white evangelical liberal, dwelled on affordable housing and the need for a fresh face in politics. And [GwenGraham, the daughter of former Gov. Bob Graham, twice invoked her father’s legacy and said it was time for the state to stop the “education industry” from siphoning money from public schools. “Shame on Rick Scott, because you have put this state in peril,” Graham said when asked about man-made climate change. “We’re sitting here at Disney World, well, Donald Trump and Rick Scott are in Fantasy Land.”

Frustrated senators grilled Florida's pot czar, demanding explanations

Senators angry at delays in medical marijuana licenses” via Dara Kam of the News Service of Florida – Frustrated senators grilled Florida's pot czar, demanding explanations for why his office missed a legislatively mandated deadline to issue new medical-marijuana licenses and why ailing patients are stuck waiting for state-issued ID cards. Christian Bax, executive director of the state Office of Medical Marijuana Use, blamed one of the delays on a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of part of a new law that required health officials to issue 10 new marijuana licenses by Oct. 3. But Senate Health Policy Chairwoman Dana Young rejected Bax's explanation. “I'm not buying that just because there's litigation out there you can't fulfill your statutory duty to issue these additional licenses,” Young, a lawyer, scolded Bax. Ailing patients, who have “already waited too long” for medical marijuana to be legalized, “deserve their government to act appropriately” to make sure they get the treatment they need, Young said.

Woman dragged out of car and beaten after she accidentally runs over child, killing him

Neallie Junior Saxon III, 22 months old, was fatally struck by a driver in a Florida neighborhood.
A Broward woman was dragged out of her vehicle and attacked after she fatally struck a little boy, police said.
According to the Broward County Sheriff's Office, authorities were called to a neighborhood in Deerfield Beach on Sunday afternoon after a child was hit by a car.
The little boy, 22-month-old Neallie Junior Saxon III, was airlifted to Fort Lauderdale Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The sheriff's department said in a Facebook post that the child had been outside playing ball with several other children without adult supervision Sunday afternoon.
A witness allegedly told officers that the children often go outside by themselves.
Authorities said the ball the kids were playing with "rolled or was thrown out of the yard causing several children to chase it into the street."
A woman, whose identity is being withheld, was driving down the street and her SUV struck Neallie knocking him down.

In a Press Release, police said the woman was driving the speed limit and they believe she became distracted by the children "darting in and out of the street."
The victim was shorter than the vehicle's bumper, and according to THI detectives, it is unlikely that he would have been visible from the driver's perspective," the department wrote.
Police said the woman was unaware she hit Neallie and kept driving. When she stopped at a nearby stop sign several people dragged her out of the car and beat her.
She was treated at a local hospital for several injuries, including fractures to her face and head.
Police said they're investigating the accident and the woman getting attacked.

Wasserman Schultz Statement on the Passing of Sgt. Johnson

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-23), the Ranking Member on the Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee, released the following statement honoring Sgt. Johnson on the day of his wake:

“Sgt. La David Terrence Johnson, a son of South Florida, served our country with great honor and pride. He will be remembered as a mentor and a role model who believed deeply in the promise of America and left us far too soon. My thoughts are with his widow Myeshia, their beautiful children Ah’Leesya and La David Jr., and all of their loved ones, as family and friends mourn Sgt. Johnson’s passing and celebrate his life.”

Miami white supremacist wants you to pay his legal bills

Alleged Racist Christopher Rey Monzon

A white supremacist who was arrested for charging at anti-Confederate demonstrators during a small protest in Florida is now asking for the internet to help pay his legal fees, according to Miami New Times.

Christopher Rey Monzon, who also goes by the name Chris Cedeno, was quickly arrested in August after he charged into the crowd, who were urging city commissioners in Hollywood, Florida, to rename streets bearing the names of Confederate generals.
“You are a cancer on the face of the earth!” Monzon told the protesters. “All Jews are!”
Video of the incident showed him waving his Confederate flag towards the protesters as he tries to rush towards the crowd. But he only made it a few feet before police officers grabbed him.
The 22-year-old Monzon was charged with disorderly conduct, aggravated assault and inciting a riot.

He has now turned to a crowdfunding website called GoyFundMe to seek help paying his legal fees.

GoyFundMe.com is for ALT-Right nazis and terrorist to raise funds
“Because Mr. Cedeno’s politics don’t follow the mainstream view, the legal system is throwing the book at him to silence him and intimidate anyone else who holds his views, namely that Islam has no place in the South,” his fundraising page claims. Monzon is seeking $1,000 to “fight these bogus charges.”

Fallen Soldiers Families Speak Out Against Trump

Relatives of nine of the 43 military members who have died during Trump's presidency (21%) tell AP that they haven't heard from him
  • "Despite Trump's boast that he reaches out personally to all families of the fallen, interviews with families members did not support his claim. Some never heard from him at all, and a few who did come away more upset."
  • AP "reached out to the families of all 43 people who have died in military service since Trump became president and made contact with about half the families. Of those who would address the question, relatives of nine said they had heard from Trump by phone or mail. Relatives of nine others said they haven't."
  • "Chris Baldridge of Zebulon, North Carolina, told The Washington Post that Trump promised him $25,000 of his own money when they spoke in the summer about the loss of his son, Army Sgt. Dillon Baldridge, killed in Afghanistan, but the check never came. The White House said [yesterday] that 'the check has been sent.'"
  • "After Army Sgt. Jonathon M. Hunter [23] died in a suicide bombing attack in Afghanistan in August ... Mark Hunter, his father, said a military casualty officer informed the family that Trump would call and the family was let down when he didn't."
  • Why it matters ... Trump told Fox News Radio's "Brian Kilmeade Show' on Tuesday: "[T]o the best of my knowledge, I think I've called every family of somebody that's died ... I have called, I believe everybody but certainly I'll use the word 'virtually' everybody ... I've called virtually everybody."

Trump Told Widow Slain Soldier Knew 'What He Signed Up For,'

Sgt. La David Johnson

President Donald Trump told U.S. Army Sgt. La David Johnson's widow Tuesday that "he knew what he signed up for ... but when it happens, it hurts anyway," when he died serving in northwestern Africa, according to U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Florida.
"Yeah, he said that," Wilson said. "So insensitive. He should have not have said that. He shouldn't have said it."
The president called about 4:45 p.m. and spoke to Johnson's pregnant widow, Myeshia Johnson, for about five minutes. She is a mother to Johnson's surviving 2-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter. The conversation happened before Johnson's remains arrived at Miami International Airport on a commercial Delta Airlines flight.
"The president's conversations with the families of American heroes who have made the ultimate sacrifice are private," a top advisor later told Local 10 News.
Wilson watched as the widow, who is expecting their third baby in January, leaned over the U.S. flag that was draping Johnson's casket. Her pregnant belly was shaking against the casket as she sobbed uncontrollably. Their daughter stood next to her stoically. Their toddler waited in the arms of a relative.
There was silence.
Local politicians, police officers and firefighters lined up to honor Johnson for his service and for the efforts and discipline that got the former Walmart employee to defy all odds and become a 25-year-old member of the 3rd Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
Johnson, who participated in a mentorship program Wilson founded in 1993, died during a mission fighting alongside Green Berets. Islamic militants ambushed them on Oct. 4 with rocket-propelled grenades and machine guns. The team reportedlydidn't have overhead armed air cover and was in unarmored pickup trucks. Reuters reported the lack of planning upset the French.
Trump didn't discuss any of the details of the ambush or say that the Pentagon was conducting an investigation. Instead, he focused on questions about whether or not he had offered his condolences to the families of the fallen.
"I will, at some point, during the period of time, call the parents and the families, because I have done that, traditionally," Trump said during a news conference last week.
Wilson criticized Trump for failing to acknowledge Johnson's death after he was left behind during the evacuation. It took nearly two days to find his body in the Republic of Niger's desert. Johnson's body made it to the U.S. on Oct. 7 when Trump was playing golf with Sen. Lindsey Graham.
Amid the controversy, Trump later said President Barack Obama and other presidents didn't make calls to the relatives of all fallen servicemen and women. Aides for both President George W. Bush's and Obama reacted on Twitter and in The Huffington Post, saying the president misspoke.
Trump later backpedaled the claim during an interview with NBC's Peter Alexander.
"President Obama, I think, probably did sometimes, and maybe sometimes he didn’t. I don’t know. That’s what I was told. All I can do, all I can do is ask my generals. Other presidents did not call. They’d write letters. And some presidents didn’t do anything," Trump said. "But I like the combination of, I like, when I can, the combination of a call and also a letter."
The Atlantic's David A. Graham believes Trump used the controversy to distract reporters. Despite the criticism, Trump continued the discussion on Fox News Radio when he raised doubt about whether or not Obama called his chief of staff, John Kelly, when Kelly's son died.
Graham said it was Trump's strategy to distract reporters from the important questions about the deadly ambush in Africa.
"The broader question, of what the soldiers who were killed were doing and what went wrong, remains unaddressed by the president, and Trump’s jab at other presidents may, unfortunately, help to keep it that way," Graham wrote
After an emotional procession from Miami-Dade County to Broward County, Johnson's remains were at a funeral home in Hollywood. There will be a public viewing from 4 to 8 p.m.  Friday and a funeral service from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, at the Christ The Rock Church at 11000 Stirling Road in Cooper City. The internment will be at the Hollywood Memorial Gardens, at 3001 N. 72 St.
According to officials with the Department of Defense, the other three victims of the attack were Staff Sgt. Bryan C. Black, 35, of Puyallup, Washington; Staff Sgt. Jeremiah W. Johnson, 39, of Springboro, Ohio; and Staff Sgt. Dustin M. Wright, 29, of Lyons, Georgia.

TODDLER RUNS INTO THE STREET, IS FATALLY STRUCK BY AN SUV

Image result for Neallie Junior Saxon III

:
Broward Sheriff's Office Traffic Homicide Investigations Unit detectives are investigating a car accident that took the life of a young boy yesterday afternoon in Deerfield Beach.
At approximately 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Neallie Junior Saxon III was playing ball with several other children near 347 N.W. Fourth Place. Witnesses told detectives that the kids often played outside without adult supervision, as they were on this occasion. Detectives believe the ball rolled or was thrown out of the yard causing several children to chase it into the street.
The driver was traveling, within the speed limit, eastbound on Northwest Fourth Place near the 300 block when the children ran into the roadway. The driver's 2007 four-door Hyundai Santa Fe SUV struck Saxon causing him to fall to the pavement.
The other children were darting in and out of the street during the incident and may have drawn the driver's attention away from Saxon. The victim was shorter than the vehicle's bumper, and according to THI detectives, it is unlikely that he would have been visible from the driver's perceptive.
Once Saxon had been struck, the driver, unaware of what had just occurred, did not alter her speed. She came to a stop at the next stop sign where she was dragged from her vehicle and beaten by several unidentified subjects. She was treated at a local hospital for her injuries which include several factures to her face and head. The battery is being investigated by BSO Deerfield Beach detectives.
The THI investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact BSO THI Detective Donnard Huneke at 954-321-4842 or Broward Crime Stoppers, anonymously, at 954-493-TIPS (8477) or www.browardcrimestoppers.org.

Trantalis launches campaign for Fort Lauderdale mayor

Image result for Trantalis launches campaign for Fort Lauderdale mayor

Today, I am announcing my candidacy to be the next mayor of the city of Fort
Lauderdale. It’s time for a new voice and a new direction.
I have been honored to represent the people of District 2 on the City Commission. While
I have always strived to be an advocate for Fort Lauderdale’s residents and
neighborhoods, our concerns have too often gone ignored within the halls of city
government.

We don’t need to look far to see the poor stewardship of our city these last few years.
Sewer and water pipes break constantly, leaving raw waste in people’s yards and
leading the state to impose a repair plan and threaten fines. Money for upgrades to our
utility infrastructure is pilfered to cover an unbalanced budget. Debris remains piled up
from a hurricane that occurred over a month ago. Traffic is at a gridlock on our streets.
Mass transit is so poorly run that ridership has dwindled and huge financial losses are
on the horizon. High-rise after high-rise is approved with no concern about whether the
city can handle the extra residents, whether we have the needed amenities to serve
those people or if any of the housing will be affordable to the average worker. Hundreds
of homeless sleep on our streets because the city lacks any coherent, compassionate
plan.

Meanwhile, we suffer through absentee leadership at City Hall and a commission
majority that willfully ignored residents’ desire for even a temporary moratorium on
growth so our infrastructure needs could be assessed. Decisions often are made in the
dead of the night when only developers, lobbyists and political insiders are present.
I am unafraid to speak up on your behalf and demand action. I’m the one candidate
running for mayor who is not beholden to special interests and will not be cowed by their
desires. We need meaningful change, not superficial change. I promise to be the
people’s mayor.

Fort Lauderdale is a great city with a diverse population and wonderful neighborhoods.
As mayor, I will ensure we work together to make the serious and necessary changes
that will benefit those who live here, work here or who come here to visit our beautiful
shores.
