Democrats Reinforce Strong Commitment to Agenda of Young People of Faith
Party Leaders Highlight Shared Values with Religious Millennials and Moderates

WASHINGTON – Democratic leaders gathered today to reaffirm their collective commitment to the young faith community’s agenda at a press conference focused on the Young Democrats of America’s recently-launched Faith and Values Initiative. Headlined by DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who is Jewish, participants included Congressman James Clyburn (D-SC), a member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church; Congressman Keith Ellison (D-MN), who is Muslim; Congressman Mike McIntyre (D-NC), a Presbyterian; Reverend Derrick Harkins, the DNC’s Director of Religious Outreach and a Baptist minister; and Young Democrats of America’s president Rod Snyder, an Evangelical Christian.

"This initiative is built on a very important premise: that neither political party has a lock on faith or values,” said DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz.  “As the first Jewish woman to represent the state of Florida in Congress, my Jewish faith is a very important and very proud part of my identity.  And nowhere in my faith upbringing do I remember a lesson about the inherent value of giving a billionaire a tax cut.  What I do remember is the central Jewish lesson of tikun olam – repairing the world – making the world a better place, and changing lives one person at a time.  I also remember a strong emphasis on the importance of social justice and improving our communities."

“Young Americans are not abandoning their faith – quite the opposite.  Our definition of what constitutes a ‘moral issue’ has expanded into foreign policy, environmental regulations, economic and tax policy, immigration and other social justice causes,” said Rod Snyder, President of the Young Democrats of America.

As the 2012 election approaches, a new generation of values voters will assess the candidates and their priorities, and they will reject the Republican Party’s “fend for yourself” theology that would roll back health care benefits for young Americans and deny a quality education, while preserving tax breaks for the wealthiest 2%.  These new values voters will frown upon a Republican Party that would reinstitute discrimination in the military and tear apart hard-working immigrant families.  They will not support candidates that elevate corporate profits above a basic responsibility to God’s creation.

“We just cannotsay, when we’re people of faith that, we’re here for the least of these. We have to show it.  We need to demonstrate it in our laws and policies,” said Congressman Jim Clyburn (D-SC).

“Let’s not forget that many of those who fought for civil rights and great changes throughout our country’s history have been people of faith,” said Congressman Mike McIntyre (D-NC).

“Today what we’re trying to do is to signal to people of faith from a broad cross section of America that we care, we’re listening and we want to engage and work closely with you so that your values – caring for the community, caring for each other, being concerned about truth, honesty and transparency in government – can be reflected in our national policy,” said Congressman Keith Ellison (D-MN).

“The work of the Democratic Party in reaching out to faith and values voters will take into account the larger conversation of core values, including economic justice, access to healthcare, job creation and voter protection. These are all issues that speak to the faith underpinnings of many voters,” said Reverend Derrick Harkins. “People of faith in America today are concerned about a wide array of issues, not just two.”

In the coming months, the Young Democrats of America will reach out to faith-based campuses and places of worship to begin a conversation about the type of country the next generation wants to inherit.  YDA will host listening sessions, trainings and service days to demonstrate that people of faith have a home in the Democratic Party.  The organization will also hold a summit in Washington, DC to begin developing a network of young Americans who can genuinely articulate how their faith has led them to pursue amore just society through political action. Through their website (www.ydafaithandvalues.org), Facebook page and twitter account (@ydafaithvalues), the Young
Democrats are spreading the message that Democrats are the best representatives of religious values.

Dem leaders Smith and Rich take whacks at Senate redistricting maps

Florida Democratic Party Chairman Rod Smith and Senate Democratic Leader Nan Rich wasted no time Monday criticizing the proposed redistricting maps for congressional and senate districts released by the Republican-led state Senate today.
"Today, Florida Republicans have taken a state - which experts have long considered one of the most malapportioned states in the country - and worsened it,'' Smith said in a statement. "In doing so, they have chosen to thwart the will of 63-percent of Florida voters by proposing maps that are aimed at incumbent protection and partisan advantage - the very things which Florida's Constitution now prohibits.
"From virtually eliminating the seat currently held by the Democratic Senate leader, to avoiding placing a single Republican incumbent at risk, it is clear the Florida GOP are working overtime to protect their interest ahead of the interest of the people they serve."
Sen. Nan Rich, the Weston Democrat and Senate Democratic leader, watched her district go from a Broward centric district to a Palm Beach centric district, a product of the fact that she is term limited out of office.
"It does appear there is some incumbent protection going on here,'' Rich said. "One of the standards is to not to allow incumbents to be favored. We're not suppoed to be talking about political parties and incumbents but, with this map, somebody must have been thinking about political parties and incumbents"

Below is information from the GOP gerrymandering committee:
Today the Senate Committee on Reapportionment published the initial proposals for redrawing congressional and state legislative district boundaries at www.flsenate.gov/redistricting. Plans S000C9002 and S000S9004 are based on testimony heard at the 26 public redistricting hearings held across the state, and reflect the unanimous bipartisan decisions made by committee members who directed staff to draw plans after reviewing publicly submitted maps during our last four interim committee meetings.

Because we want to hear what you have to say about our maps, the Senate has opened numerous lines of communication. We looked hard to find a way to host another round of public hearings at locations all across the state, but it was not possible without pushing back the timeline we were repeatedly asked to speed up. Instead, professional staff, in consultation the Florida Channel, came up with what I think is an even easier, more accessible, and more efficient way for Floridians to comment on the new maps.

Beginning today, citizens are able to participate by submitting testimony in a number of different ways:
·        By calling 855-FLA-MAPS (toll free) and leaving a message;
·        By emailing comments to RedistrictFlorida@flsenate.gov;
·        By sending comments via Twitter to @Redistrict2012;
·        By posting video feedback on the Reapportionment Committee’s YouTube page;
·        By visiting the Committee’s Facebook page; or

These methods for collecting public input were chosen to provide convenient ways for the public to continue to be fully engaged in the redistricting process.  In partnership with the Florida Channel, the feedback received will be broadcast at the next committee meeting on December 6, when the committee formally introduces the legislation. If we get more public comments than we have time to hear during the meeting, we will listen to what we can, and post the entire collection on the Senate Redistricting website.

Of course, public input and testimony will also be welcomed at the committee’s next meeting on December 6 in room 412 of the W.V. Knott Building at the Capitol Complex. If you would just like to watch the committee meeting, you can view it online on the Senate’s Media Page or The Florida Channel’s Redistricting Video Library.

Your interest and input are appreciated. Please continue to stay involved in whatever way you can.

Wasserman Schultz:On Rep. Frank's Retirement

Responding to reports that Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) will not seek reelection, Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) called the 71-year-old congressman a "historic pioneer in American politics" and a personal mentor.

"This is a man of incredible intellect. A powerhouse who has championed the rights of consumers in the financial services community," Wasserman Schultz said. "I really have a heavy heart today. I'm going to miss him terribly."
Wasserman Schultz, who frequently speaks on behalf of the Democratic Party, told reporters on Monday that while Frank's retirement was a major loss for the country, it was something he had been contemplating for a long time.
"He has got a lot of wonderful years left, and he absolutely deserves to enjoy life a little and take a little bit of a breather," she said.

Reps. Deutch and Wasserman Schultz Host Jobs Fair for Veterans

This Saturday:
Reps. Deutch and Wasserman Schultz Host Jobs Fair for Veterans
(Ft. Lauderdale, FL) This Saturday, December 3rd, Congressman Ted Deutch (FL-19) and Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-20) will host a Veterans Jobs Fair at the Fort Lauderdale Armory. This event follows the recent passage of new tax credits for employers who hire unemployed veterans included in President Obama’s American Jobs Act. With so many of our troops returning home to a difficult economy after serving bravely in Iraq and Afghanistan, this event will provide some of our servicemen and women with an opportunity to mingle with local employers interested in hiring a hero.
Congressman Ted Deutch is appreciative of any South Florida media outlet willing to help get the word out for the Veterans Jobs Fair. Just a moment of your airtime or a few lines of print space could help a hero launch a meaningful career after serving our country.

The Returning Heroes Tax Credit is a new hiring tax credit that will provide an incentive for businesses to hire unemployed veterans.
  • Short-term unemployed: A new credit of 40 percent of the first $6,000 of wages (up to $2,400) for employers who hire veterans who have been unemployed at least 4 weeks.
  • Long-term unemployed: A new credit of 40 percent of the first $14,000 of wages (up to $5,600) for employers who hire veterans who have been unemployed longer than 6 months.
The Wounded Warrior Tax Credit will double the existing tax credit for long-term unemployed veterans with service-connected disabilities.
  • Maintain the existing Work Opportunity Tax Credit for veterans with service-connected disabilities.  (Currently the maximum is $4,800.)
  • A new credit of 40 percent of the first $24,000 of wages (up to $9,600) for firms that hire veterans with service-connected disabilities who have been unemployed longer than 6 months.

The Jobs Crisis: What Did Roosevelt Do That Obama Should?

The Jobs Crisis: What Did Roosevelt Do That Obama
The Jobs Crisis: What Did Roosevelt Do That Obama Should?
Martin Bennett and Richard Walker, Truthout: "The original version of President Obama's increasingly embattled jobs plan aimed to provide a much-needed extension of unemployment benefits and a payroll tax cut for working Americans, but outlined only scarce measures to dent the catastrophic rate of unemployment. What we need today is a massive jobs program like the Works Progress Administration (WPA) launched by President Franklin Roosevelt."

Tips For Safe Toys

Whether you’re avoiding Black Friday or already at the mall this morning, there is more than one way to shop for safe toys this holiday season:
  • If you’ve got a smartphone, go to www.toysafety.mobi to access our shopping tips and other resources.
  • You can also get our tips for safe toys and send them to a friend from our website.
This year we found:
  • Choking hazards. We found toys that were too small and posed a choking hazard to small children.
  • Toxic chemicals. Despite bans on these chemicals, we found toys that still contained toxic levels of lead and phthalates.
  • Noise. We found toys that were loud enough to cause permanent hearing damage in young children.
We have resources you can use to help make sure you're buying safe toys for the kids in your life. Visit www.toysafety.mobi on your smartphone or visit our website for more information.

Shop safe this holiday season.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s Statement on GOP Presidential Debate on National Security

Following the Republican presidential debate on national security held in Washington, D.C. tonight, DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz released the following statement:

“Tonight Mitt Romney’s extreme views on immigration came into clear focus. He once again went to the right of every other Republican presidential candidate, refusing to agree with others on the stage that tearing apart families is wrong or that we shouldn't implement an extreme and inhumane immigration policy. This kind of attitude is harmful to our country, our nation’s families, and our standing in the world. It certainly runs counter to what we stand for and doesn’t reflect our values as Americans.

“The candidates tonight offered nothing more than another round of empty sound bites, false attacks and serious inconsistencies. Their performance was a stark contrast to the President’s robust foreign policy achievements. The fact is, the American people need leaders on the international stage who are decisive, consistent, and committed to strengthening our country, not undermining it, and Mitt Romney and the rest of the GOP field fail that test."

Religious right get-out-the-vote event takes place at 34 Florida churches tomorrow

This Saturday, 34 churches in Florida will host a viewing of "One Nation Under God," which is being promoted as a "two-hour premiere DVD event featuring top American thinkers and political leaders who will bring the truth about God and America to people gathered in homes and churches across the nation." The event is a thinly veiled national get-out-the-vote push for the religious right.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s Statement Recognizing Veterans Day

“Today, in communities across the country, we honor the courage and sacrifice of the many brave servicemen and women who have given so much to their country and fought to ensure that America continues to enjoy the freedoms and opportunities that make our nation great.  We owe each and every one of America’s veterans our eternal gratitude for their bravery and dedication.
“On this day of reflection, we must also recommit ourselves to the critical work of providing for the needs of all of America’s service members – whether they are still serving our country or have returned to civilian life.  Under the President’s leadership, we have made important progress for our veterans and military families: providing improved medical care for the wounded and enhanced mental health services, tackling the issue of homelessness among our veterans, repealing the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy so that all Americans can serve their country openly, and implementing the Post-9/11 GI Bill to ensure that 300,000 veterans and family members have the support they need to earn a college degree.  And the President has followed through on his commitment to bring our service members home from Iraq.
“But our work is far from over.  President Obama is fighting to get Congress to pass the American Jobs Act, which offers tax credits to businesses that hire veterans, and he has taken action at the executive level to help our nation’s veterans find work now.  America’s service members have offered their lives to protect our country, and they deserve our full support.  To all of our nation’s veterans, we salute you, we thank you for your service, and we will continue to stand with you now and in the future.”

DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s Statement on Senate Passage of President’s Plan to Put Veterans Back to Work

“Today, Republicans in the Senate finally agreed to work with the President and helped pass two components of the President’s jobs plan that will put America’s veterans back to work.  Republicans have voted repeatedly in recent weeks to block part or all of the Americans Jobs Act.  I hope that today’s passage of the Returning Heroes and Wounded Warrior Tax Credits is a signal that Republicans realize they can no longer plug their ears to the voice of the American people, who are tired of waiting and demand action now to create jobs and restore our economic security.

“On the eve of Veterans Day, today’s vote is a fitting tribute to the millions of American veterans who have offered their lives to protect our country, and who deserve our full support for all the sacrifices they have made.  It builds on the efforts of President Obama to take action at the executive level to provide support to our veterans and help them make the transition back to civilian life.  I encourage Republicans in Congress to continue working with the President to put Americans back to work and grow our economy by passing the rest of the American Jobs Act.”

Inspired by First Lady Michelle Obama

I was recently in the ballroom of the Signature Grand in Davie and I was surrounded by people who were just as excited as I was to see the special guest for the evening; First Lady Michelle Obama.  The feeling in the room was like that of a family reunion. It was warm and welcoming and proved that people from all across the state were indeed excited about re-electing President Obama in 2012.

Listening to the First Lady made it evident that Mrs. Obama shares my concerns.  Though Mrs. Obama may be very knowledgeable about the complex issues that her husband tackles every day, when she spoke she didn’t just bring up the President’s many accomplishments.  She addressed what those accomplishments mean to Florida families and to every individual in that room.

Mrs. Obama knows that this next election won’t just decide our economic and foreign policies.  As she put it so well, it will determine who we are as a nation and the future of younger generations.

She asked the question that we should ask ourselves each day:  Will we honor that fundamental American belief that I am my brother’s keeper, I am my sister’s keeper and if one of us is hurting, then we’re all hurting?

I volunteer with the campaign’s team here in Broward because I know what this election means to my family and my community.  I know that I want someone at the White House who walks into the Oval Office every morning and asks themselves, what do these issues mean to this country?  How do the actions we take exemplify who we are as a nation?

The First Lady’s visit meant a great deal to me and the others in the room that night.  It was much more than a chance to get a picture or two of Mrs. Obama.  It was an opportunity to stand together and look towards the fight we face to do what is right for this country and future generations.

Support for free speech needed at the Broward County Commission on Tuesday, November 8 at 10am

UPDATE WATCH THE MEETING LIVE HERE
http://broward.granicus.com/ViewPublisher.php?view_id=5

Support for free speech needed at the Broward County Commission on Tuesday, November 8 at 10am.  Please see information below and in the attachment about the use of designated county facilities.

We have now received the County Administrator’s new proposed guidelines (attached) for the use of County Facilities for campaigning, advocacy, and voter registration on non-election days, including shockingly a new permitting requirement.  We are appalled by this proposed restriction of free speech and electioneering at county facilities.  This proposal is unacceptable!  County property should belong to the citizens of Broward County, and to propose unnecessary barriers to campaigning, issue advocacy, and educating the public is just plain wrong.  It should be incumbent on government to make face to face electioneering easier, not harder.  The downside of this proposed restriction on the opportunity for free speech, especially political free speech, clearly outweighs whatever reasons are behind this new proposal.
As an alternative to these unnecessary restrictions, we are proposing the reasonable and commonsense guidelines listed below.  We need your support!  Volunteers, candidates, and elected officials must be allowed to register voters, introduce themselves, educate the public, and discuss issues and receive input directly with our neighbors, without the barriers that are being proposed.

We have been told that this matter will be on the Broward County Commission Agenda on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 starting at 10 AM.  We are asking you to come out on that day to the Commission Meeting to support our proposal.  Please share this request with all of your contacts in Broward County.

Here are the guidelines we are proposing for campaigning at non-polling places and on non-election days outside of county facilities:

Use of County Property/Facilities outside of the Election Process:

        *  Volunteers have the right to address matters of significant interest to the public.<,span>

*  No commercial speech or activity.

*  Volunteers may not charge for any activity.

*  Volunteers may not block entrances, exits, or access in any way.

*  Volunteers may not damage County property or disrupt County operations in any way.

*  Tables, chairs, coolers, and umbrellas are allowed for personal use only.

*  Signs may be held, affixed to tables, or placed on the grass next to tables; signs may not be placed on trees, fences, or buildings.

        *  All items (including trash) must be removed at the end of the day.

*  No tents, canopies, sound amplification devices or similar items may be used without Board approval.

*  Volunteers are responsible for any damage.

*  Volunteers must comply whth state, and federal laws, and local rules, regulations, or ordinances.

Don’t forget:  Tuesday, November 8, 2011 starting at 10 AM, at the Broward County Commission, 115 S. Andrews Avenue (just south of Broward), 4th Floor.  Thank you for your support!
