St Pete Mayor Rick Kriseman Headed For A Runoff Election

Former St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Baker and current Mayor Rick Kriseman apparently aren't finished duking it out as voters virtually split their decision on which of them should lead the Tampa Bay city next term.
Voters sent the two Ricks into a November runoff Tuesday, when neither candidate reached the necessary 50 percent or more of the vote.
Kriseman took a little over 48 percent while the challenger , also took a little over 48 percent of the vote.
Despite not being a partisan race technically, Kriseman had significant help from the Democratic Party in recent weeks, which helped propel his campaign forward leading up to Tuesday
 President Obama endorsed Kriseman, calling him the "only choice" for continued progress in St. Petersburg.
“As mayor of St. Petersburg, Rick Kriseman has taken on big challenges to move St. Pete forward,” Obama said in a news release. “From raising the minimum wage and fighting for equality, to bold leadership on climate change, Rick was a great ally on the priorities of my administration."
Nearly 80,000 voters in St. Petersburg are registered Democrats, while a little over 47,000 are registered Republicans.
The Florida Democratic Party accredited Baker's performance with an "adherence" to President Donald Trump's "harmful" agenda.
"Under the Trump White House, we can't afford Republicans like Rick Baker who are complicit in every harmful policy this President enacts," said FDP spokesperson Johanna Cervone. "Baker will never challenge Donald Trump because he would lose the support of the GOP special interests that fund his campaign."
Cervone said Kriseman's reputation as a strong progressive was what helped push his numbers on Election Day.
"It's why Democrats like President Obama endorsed the mayor," she said.

How Texas Lawmakers Missed The Chance To Plan For Climate Change

With rising sea levels and increased rainfall, experts agree, climate change made the flooding from Hurricane Harvey far worse than it would have been even a decade ago. Former President Obama endorses Kriseman for St. Petersburg mayor

On Friday, former U.S. President Barack Obama (D) endorsed Rick Kriseman (D) for re-election as mayor of St. Petersburg, Florida. The endorsement was Obama's fourth since leaving office and 170th since 2014.

Kriseman, who served in the Florida House of Representatives from 2006 to 2012, was an early Obama supporter in 2008. He faces six challengers, including former Mayor Rick Baker (R), in his bid for re-election. Two recent polls of the race each show Kriseman trailing Baker by 6 points. If no candidate receives more than 50 percent of the vote, a general election will be held on November 7 between the top two finishers.

Democratic Governors Candidates At WPB Forum Club

Photo By Carol Porter

The three leading Democratic candidates for Florida governor called for the removal of Confederate statues and monuments from public places during a Forum Club of the Palm Beaches lunch today at the Kravis Center.
In only their second joint appearance, Democratic candidates Andrew Gillum, Gwen Graham and Chris King steered clear of major policy conflicts but highlighted biographical differences that each said would make him or her the most electable candidate in a state where Democrats haven’t won a governor’s race since 1994.
The three fielded questions from Michael Williams of WPTV Channel 5, then from members of the audience of more than 600.
A student from the Benjamin School asked about Confederate monuments, which have drawn renewed attention since a deadly white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va. this month and President Donald Trump‘s response that “many sides” were to blame for the violence.
“It’s time and it’s right to take down our Confederate monuments across the state of Florida. All of them,” said King, a Winter Park businessman who said his private sector experience and outsider status are what Democrats need to end their gubernatorial losing streak.
Tallahassee Mayor Gillum, trying to become the first black governor in Florida history, joked that “you can probably guess” his position on Confederate monuments.
“I’m totally interested in the retaining of history because it’s important that we not repeat it. But can we put these monuments in places where you can actually put them in context and not in celebrated, exalted parts of our society?” Gillum said.
Former U.S. Rep. Graham agreed that “we need to move the Confederate monuments to places that reflect history or in our textbooks.”
She added: “Shame on Donald Trump from fueling hatred, for placing KKK, Naziism and white supremacy on an even plane with those that were protecting and talking about their value systems, which are the right value systems for this country.”

Is Florida AG Pam Bondi Scamming Voters Out Of Our Money

An Orlando entrepreneur is now demanding a jury trial in his suit against Attorney General Pam Bondi, in which he claims she forces businesses to donate millions of dollars to unregistered charities as part of settlements in consumer protection cases.
John D. Smith, who invented Storm Stoppers plastic panels, marketed as a “plywood alternative” to protect windows during storms, filed papers this week in Leon County Circuit Civil court. He had been investigated on a consumer fraud allegation by Bondi’s office in 2015.
In another filing, Smith said Bondi “should have at least affirmatively stated that her exercise of powers comports with Florida law.”
The latest filings are in response to Bondi’s request for a summary judgment, which allows parties to win a case without a trial.
But such motions are granted only when there is a significant dispute as to the facts of a case. They allow requiring enough evidence to make that determination. And Smith’s lawyer, Scott Siverson, has said he hasn’t been able to get information from Bondi’s office.
Bondi’s motion says “there is no statutory requirement that … settlements under (Florida law) be made to a charity, much less to a registered charity.”
Siverson countered: “A mere possibility that any of the charities were unregistered (or) solicited the contributions they received creates factual disputes which cannot be resolved on summary judgment.”
He added: “Nowhere does the Florida Legislature authorize the (Office of the Attorney General) to forward (a) contribution to whomever it pleases.”
Since she first assumed office in 2011, Bondi’s office settled enforcement actions with 14 businesses in which they wound up paying more than $5.5 million to 35 unregistered charities, Smith’s suit says.
Bondi has called the legal action “ meritless” and “harassment.” The next hearing in the matter is set for next Monday.

House LGBT Caucus Decries President’s Attack on Transgender Service Members

Today, the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus responded to the Trump administration’s release of a guidance intended to ban transgender people from serving in the military.

“President Trump is spitting in the face of brave men and women who want nothing more than to serve their country with honor,” said LGBT Equality Caucus Executive Director Roddy Flynn.  “Transgender service members volunteer their lives to protect the people and values of our nation.  We should be grateful for their service and their sacrifice.  The President’s decision runs counter to facts, medical research, and even the Pentagon’s own internal deliberation.  This is a sad day for our nation and the LGBT Equality Caucus will be fighting every day to ensure this tragic policy is reversed.”

Wasserman Schultz on Trump's Arpaio Pardon

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-23) released the following statement after President Trump pardoned former Sheriff Joe Arpaio tonight:

"After drawing kudos from racists for his response to a fatal white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Donald Trump chooses now, of all times, to pardon former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. This shameful act – done under cover of a Friday night rollout – is just another ugly, brazen pander to his nativist base. With a notorious reputation for ethnic profiling, Arpaio was found guilty of criminal contempt related to his refusal to stop imprisoning suspected illegal immigrants after being ordered by a federal judge to stop. This pardon will only sew more discord and division within our nation, and maintain the steady stream of shame that Trump heaps upon his sacred office nearly every day."

Wasserman Schultz on Venezuelan TPS, Sanctions

.

 Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-23) issued the following statement regarding the current situation in Venezuela and the latest sanctions announcement from the Trump Administration:

“Venezuela is clearly governed by a brutal dictator who has plunged that nation into political and economic chaos that has resulted in legitimate fear for the safety of Venezuelans who have fled their native country. Therefore, I strongly support granting Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to all eligible Venezuelans who seek safe haven from a regime that has employed official violence and political oppression and left that nation devastated by food and medical shortages. President Trump must grant this essential status for the safety of Venezuelans who came to the U.S. out of fear for theirs and their families' safety.

While these new sanctions announced today are a step in the right direction, the executive order announced by the Trump Administration falls short of truly holding the Maduro regime accountable for these corrupt, anti-democratic practices. These latest sanctions seek to ban Venezuelan officials from raising funds from new debt offerings, and ban any transactions in older, government held bonds. However, this action largely exempts Goldman Sachs, one of the largest U.S. bondholders. This is especially troubling given the ties to Goldman by key members of the Trump Administration. Obviously, stronger economic penalties are needed and we must continue to tighten the vice on the Maduro regime, so I will continue to push for sanctions and policies that hold this dictatorship accountable, curb any illicit narcotics flowing to the United States, and address the escalating humanitarian crisis there.”

Wasserman Schultz on Hurricane Andrew 25th Anniversary

 Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-23) released the following statement to mark the 25thanniversary of Hurricane Andrew making landfall in South Florida:

"As we remember the 25th anniversary of Hurricane Andrew devastating South Florida, we recall the destruction and damage the storm left in its path. The storm upended the lives of tens of thousands of South Floridians and changed our lives forever. The anniversary should serve as a reminder that this hurricane season, like every year, South Floridians must take early precautions and prepare for the potential of severe storms. As individuals make their hurricane preparation plans, Congress has an obligation to adequately fund NOAA and FEMA while taking action on climate change, which increases the frequency and intensity of storms. But today, I stand with my neighbors and constituents remembering what we all went through together during that devastating storm."

Broward County is officially on the record in support of the "Say Yes to 2nd Chances"

Broward County is officially on the record in support of the "Say Yes to 2nd Chances" project and the principles behind the proposed constitutional Voting Restoration Amendment to the Florida Constitution.

Broward Mayor Barbara Sharief brought forward a resolution supporting the principles which would, with limited exceptions, restore the voting rights of citizens convicted of a felony upon completion of sentence, parole and probation. The resolution was unanimously passed by the Commission.

Commissioners also expressed opposition to any efforts, legislative or otherwise, to restrict voting rights in general with the exception of those convicted of murder or sexual offenses.

"Florida citizens who have committed crimes and successfully completed the terms of their sentence should have their right to vote restored. Florida is one of a few states in the country that does not allow this to happen and I believe that the right to vote is at the fundamental core of democracy. If a person has paid their debt to society, their right to vote should be restored," said Mayor Sharief.

It's estimated that nearly 1.5 million Floridians are prohibited from voting because of a prior felony conviction. The Sentencing Project, a research and advocacy center, reports that more than one in five African Americans in the State of Florida are banned from voting due
to felony convictions.

Pressure mounting for Congress to censure Trump

After Trump’s remarks defending white supremacists, Nazis, and the KKK for their riot in Charlottesville last weekend, Democrats in Congress introduced a censure resolution that would condemn Trump for his comments. As of Friday afternoon, 79 Democrats had signed onto the measure—and now Pelosi has joined.

While censure would be a symbolic condemnation of Trump, it also calls on him to “fire any and all White House advisors who have urged him to cater to the white supremacist movement in the United States.” Steve Bannon is out, but Trump still has firing to do.

Sign now if you agree that Trump must be censured and remove all white supremacists from the White House.

The membership of the Florida LGBTA Democratic Caucus, meeting in Tallahassee for its Summer Conference, adopted a resolution calling on Congress to censure President Trump for his anti-lgbt actions, his erratic and destabilizing rhetoric, and his support for white supremacist groups.

"If anyone had any doubt before, events of the past week have made clear that President Trump is a danger to our community and our country," said Terry Fleming, president of the Florida LGBTA Democratic Caucus. "We urge the Florida Congressional delegation to take steps to counter the harmful actions of the Trump administration."

The text of the resolution follows:

RESOLUTION OF THE FLORIDA LGBTA DEMOCRATIC CAUCUS REGARDING PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP

August 19, 2017

Whereas the Florida LGBTA Democratic Caucus was formed in 2005 to promote diversity, inclusion, and the celebration of Florida's LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community;

Whereas, as an arm of the Florida Democratic Party, the LGBTA Democratic Caucus declares its vision is to be "a voice that seeks to instill awareness of the freedoms of a democratic society, educate future leaders, support the community at large, and maintain an ongoing rapport and increasing viability with political entities";

Whereas President Donald J. Trump's administration has taken actions intended to harm and minimize the contributions and participation of the LGBT community, including:
  • announcing a reinstatement of the ban on transgender military personnel;
  • filing a legal brief at a federal appeals court arguing that anti-gay discrimination is legal under federal law;
  • reversing guidance from the Obama administration that protected transgender children from discrimination in public schools;
  • appointing a Supreme Court justice, Neil Gorsuch, who opposes LGBT rights;
  • failing to recognize Pride Month in June 2017;
  • signaling that he would support the First Amendment Defense Act which would allow discrimination against LGBT people on a religious basis; and
  • nominating Gov, Sam Brownback of Kansas, a vocal opponent of gay rights, as ambassador at large for international religious freedom;
Whereas the president's erratic behavior and misguided, inaccurate and misleading statements create an environment of uncertainty for American leadership on the world stage; and

Whereas the president's vocal support for white supremacist groups, organizations and individuals in the wake of the violence in Charlottesville represents a shameful stain on the presidency and makes all Americans less safe; now, therefore be it

Resolved that the Florida LGBTA Democratic Caucus
  1. urges Florida Members of Congress - Democrats and Republicans - to sign onto, support and push for passage of a Congressional motion to censure the President of the United States;
  2. demands that Florida Members of Congress continue to forcefully speak out in opposition to the divisive words and actions of the Trump administration as a way to shine a light on and counter the dangerous environment being fostered; and
  3. demands that Florida Members of Congress introduce and support legislation requiring that transgender service members be allowed to serve openly in the military.

Will FPL Customers Pay Now for Future Power?

 A federal appeals court hears arguments this week in a case challenging a Florida law that leaves utility customers on the hook for speculative nuclear projects.

The controversial nuclear cost-recovery law passed in 2006, at a time when nuclear power appeared to be making a comeback, but things have changed with the rise of renewable energy.

Utility watchdog J.R. Kelly, public counsel for the Florida Office of Public Counsel, is asking regulators to reject the latest multi-billion dollar request by the state's largest utility, Florida Power and Light.

"We have a fundamental concern that ratepayers should not be paying profit on these costs when it is unknown if the facility is even going to be built," Kelly states.

The plaintiffs contend the nuclear cost-recovery law is unconstitutional and seek to recoup $2 billion they say utility customers have already paid.

FPL says it isn’t the right party to be sued – that it is following state law, so the State of Florida should be on the hot seat. But the plaintiffs say it's the utility collecting money from consumers.

Attorney George Cavros with the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy says ratepayers should be outraged over Florida's nuclear cost-recovery law.

"All the risk, all the costs, effectively fall upon their customers,” he stresses. “So, these utilities are encouraged to keep pursuing projects even when they don't make sense, because they can recover, and they're guaranteed recovery, essentially."

A federal district judge last year dismissed the case, prompting the plaintiffs to go to the U.S. Court of Appeals in Atlanta.

 A tiny insect is placing Florida citrus in jeopardy, but residents can help.

Citrus trees in the Sunshine State are under attack from the Asian citrus psyllid (ACP), a tiny mottled brown insect about the size of an aphid that feeds on the new Leafs of citrus trees and some ornamental plants.

It also leaves behind plant bacteria and leads to what's called citrus greening disease.

Researchers have found a wasp (Tamarixia) that controls the bug, and homeowners are asked to set some of them free into their own yards and gardens.

The Florida Department of Agriculture is mailing out packages of the wasp to anyone who requests them.

Jim Notestein, a long-time Gainesville resident, is helping spread the word around the state. He says the wasps don't sting and are easy to release.

"When the good wasps are sent to you, you want to open your package fairly quickly and put the wasps out to go to work,” he states. “There'll be instructions on the package.

“They'll be sent in the overnight mail. You wouldn't want to get your package of bugs, and let them sit on the counter for a week. The wasps only live for about three weeks."

Environmental groups urge the use of natural predators as opposed to toxic pesticides.

Florida has already had to deal with the Citrus canker, Whitefly infestations, fire ants, and other viruses and diseases. Notestein says this is a problem that Floridians can help solve.

"We're hoping this is going to be kind of a human network that once people who find out that have kind of a vision of a better future that they could be part of making, the so-called citizen scientists,” he states.

Notestein says if enough people release the wasp and it becomes established in neighborhoods, it can become the first line of defense to save fruit trees in Florida.

Rep. Deutch Co-Introduces Bill to Protect Immigrant Youth

American Hope Act will protect DACA recipients and DREAMers from deportation

Congressman Ted Deutch (FL-22) joined with Congressman Luis Gutierrez (IL-4) and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus to introduce the "American Hope Act of 2017," a bill to provide a permanent legislative solution to the immigrant status of more than 800,000 young people enrolled in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA).
"The foundation of the relationship between DREAMers and the U.S. government has been built on trust. These children placed their trust in us when they came forward to register under DACA. They, and their families, are vital parts of our communities. They do not deserve to have their trust betrayed and the roots that they have grown here to be pulled out from under them," said Congressman Deutch. "The President's callous treatment of immigrant youth demands a strong response from Congress. I'm proud to stand up for DACA and all of the DREAMers in South Florida by cosponsoring the American Hope Act."

The American Hope Act would:
  • Allow DACA beneficiaries and other immigrant youth to apply for conditional permanent resident status;
  • Allow those granted CPR status to obtain full lawful permanent resident status after 3 years if they have no arrest record;
  • Provide a 5-year path to U.S. citizenship;
  • Allow minors to apply for conditional permanent resident status through a legal guardian or counsel; and
  • Improve college affordability for undocumented youth and other immigrants by repealing rules that limit their access to in-state tuition and college loans.
Deutch supported passage of the DREAM Act in the House of Representatives in December 2010.
