AlanClendenin.com E-mail Update
As the 2008-2012 First Vice Chair of the Miami Dade Democratic Party, I saw first hand who was actively involved in the Get Out The Vote effort in Miami Dade County. The majority of the work in Miami Dade was done by grassroots volunteers who took their time to canvass, make phone calls and register voters. This was a labor of love for the President and some of them partnered with Organizing for America.
I have been involved with the Miami Dade Democratic Party over 20 years and the Florida Democratic Party for fifteen years. I have seen the transition from Miami Dade Democratic Party Chairs over the last twelve years. Miami Dade has several strong clubs that have come through when the times got tough and I commend them. They are the unsung heroes who give their time over and over. I have also been the state president of the Democratic Black Caucus of Florida(2003-2007) and organized over twenty five county caucuses that worked well with their local county Democratic Executive Committees.
I read Alan Clendenin's Plan; "Rebrand, Rebuild, Recruit." I found it to be the best plan I have seen coming from a candidate running for Florida Democratic Party Chair. It is a plan of inclusion and direct action. I also had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Clendenin at the Broward County Democratic Executive Committee elections and had the opportunity to ask him questions about his plan. I came away satisfied that he would do well as our Florida Democratic Party Chair.
Let us not lose sight of the main goal of the Democratic Party. We must elect the best qualified candidates to lead in all political races and we must start with electing the best candidate to lead the Florida Democratic Party. "That candidate is Alan Clendenin."

BSO LAUDED FOR HOMELESS & HATE CRIMES ADVOCACY

1:30 p.m. News Conference
Friday, January 4, 2013
Public Safety Building
2601 W. Broward Blvd.
Fort Lauderdale

For more than four years the Broward Sheriff’s Office has worked to reduce hate crimes and crimes against the homeless. As a result of that hard work and dedication, Florida  no longer leads the nation in attacks on the homeless and Broward no longer leads the state in reported hate crimes.

“Hatred based on a person’s race, religion, sexual orientation and residential status can’t be tolerated. Four years ago I was disturbed to learn that Broward was number one when it came to these senseless acts fueled by hate, and I am proud today that is no longer true,” said Sheriff Al Lamberti.

Earlier this week, in two separate reports, BSO was lauded for its efforts to reduce violence against the homeless population. In the National Coalition for the Homeless report titled “Hate Crimes Against the Homeless: The Brutality of Violence Unveiled,” it states “…that in 2011, hate crimes against homeless people significantly decreased in Florida due to the emergence of a new state-level legislation that incorporated homelessness into its hate crimes law.” According to the Florida Attorney General’s 2011 Hate Crimes Report, Broward County no longer leads the state in reported hate crimes.

Sheriff Lamberti created the Hate Crimes/Anti-Bias Task Force in September 2008 and tapped Captain Rick Wierzbicki to head the effort.

Captain Wierzbicki worked tirelessly to get Florida House Bill 11 passed through the House and Senate. On May 11, 2010, Governor Charlie Crist signed the historic Crimes Against Homeless Persons Act into law. HB 11 enhanced Florida’s Hate Crimes statute and afforded more protection to crime victims who are attacked on the basis of their homelessness.

Since then, Captain Wierzbicki has taken his fight to Washington DC, testifying before the United States Senate and House of Representatives about the importance of protecting the rights and equality of all people. Captain Wierzbicki said, “BSO is now considered a national model for protecting the rights of the homeless.”

How To Cut Spending: End Corporate Welfare!!!

As Rex Nutting of Marketwatch noted in his 12/18/2012 article “Why isn’t Obama demanding corporate welfare cuts?”, “$2.6 trillion could be saved [...] It’s possible to achieve all the budget savings we need for the next 10 years simply by cutting the fat out of discretionary spending programs and tax expenditures [removing all of the corporate welfare] without raising tax rates on the wealthy or cutting the safety net at all.”

Oil and gas companies, which are raking in record profits, certainly don’t need $4 billion a year in subsidies, and even the oil company CEOs admit they don’t need it!

Why are cuts to Social Security and Medicare even being discussed while literally billions in corporate welfare are constantly spilling out of the Treasury?
