House LGBT Caucus Aging Task Force Demands Trump Administration Not Erase LGBT Elders



 Rep. Ted Deutch (FL-22), Chair of the LGBT Aging Issues Task Force, and 49 members of the U.S. House of Representatives demanded the Trump Administration reinstate LGBT demographic questions to the National Survey of Older Americans Act Participants (NSOAAP).

“As we fight for full equality for our LGBT family, it’s important to recognize the unique needs of LGBT seniors,” said Deutch.  “Older LGBT Americans often face new levels of discrimination as they age and struggle with higher than average levels of poverty and social isolation.  Federally funded programs should not contribute to this terrible homophobic and transphobic culture.  We need the data from these surveys to better ensure that LGBT seniors are receiving the care they need and deserve, without prejudice.”

The NSOAAP is used to evaluate whether the billions of dollars in funding for programs assisting older Americans are being used efficiently and effectively.  Since 2014, the NSOAAP has included LGBT-specific questions that yielded vital data on the extreme challenges facing LGBT elders.  On March 13, 2017, the Administration on Community Living—which oversees the NSOAAP—revealed that they intended to remove the LGBT-specific questions from the 2017 survey.

In 2011, a wide-ranging study from the National Senior Citizen Law Center (now called Justice in Aging) and other organizations captured alarming evidence of widespread discrimination against LGBT seniors in long-term care facilities.

WASSERMAN SCHULTZ ON VA BREAST CANCER SCREENING GUIDELINES ANNOUNCEMENT



 Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-23) issued the following statement on the announcement by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) that it is adopting the American Cancer Society (ACS) breast cancer screening guidelines:

“I am thrilled that the Department of Veterans Affairs announced that it will shift from the controversial United States Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) guidelines for breast cancer screening and mammography to the American Cancer Society’s breast cancer screening guidelines. For years, I have fought the USPSTF guidelines, along with other cancer experts and advocacy organizations. In the 114th Congress, I sponsored legislation that became law, which placed a moratorium on the USPSTF breast cancer screening guidelines, to allow breast cancer experts and organizations to review and reach consensus on when screening should begin. The law requires coverage for mammography beginning at age 40.

Having recently learned that the VA previously adopted the USPSTF guidelines, I filed legislation last week after speaking with VA Secretary David Shulkin that would ensure that the widely accepted guidelines – which call for women to begin breast cancer screening at 40 – are required to be used by the VA for veterans and all women. I will continue to aggressively pursue this legislation.

Nonetheless, the announcement this week by Secretary Shulkin is a tremendous victory for women veterans who now formally have the choice to begin screenings at the age of 40, and be eligible for yearly exams at age 45. I will closely monitor how this policy is implemented, but it would be a major step in allowing our women veterans to take control of their own breast health. And now they can also take comfort in knowing that that they will not be treated any differently than women in the private sector. As a breast cancer survivor myself, who was diagnosed at the young age of 41, I know how vital this life-saving policy can be for millions of our veterans.”

Congressman Ted Deutch (FL-22), Ranking Member of the House Ethics Committee and a senior member of the House Judiciary Committee, issued this statement following the news that President Trump fired FBI Director James Comey:

“Not since President Nixon have we seen such a disgraceful abuse of power and attack on the integrity of our system of justice. During one of the most important national security investigations of our time, Director Comey's firing is a blatant attack on the independence of the Justice Department. This behavior - firing the person who is investigating you – may pass in Putin’s Russia, but it is disgracefully below the office of the President of the United States.

"This is only the latest in a string of alarming moves by the White House: first they fired acting-Attorney General Yates for calling attention to their compromised National Security Advisor, then Preet Bharara, and now Director Comey.

"Attorney General Sessions has lost any remaining credibility by getting involved in an investigation from which he promised to recuse himself. Given the actions of the White House, the American people, unfortunately, must now question whether anyone affiliated with this Administration can investigate this case of Russian influence honestly, thoroughly, and independently. We need a special prosecutor and an independent commission to continue this investigation without the whiff of political oversight or interference."

Plus + The majority of registered independents would have had to vote Trump which is not likely when you look at the low turn out of those voting for an independent candidate in this states county of Desoto.
 
Also according to exit poll data acrosss Florida as well as across nation Those voting Trump were Males 45+ and most of them are registered Republican. State totaled a minority percentage of those Registered Independent voted for Trump

For this election to prove true a larger percentage of independent voters would have to prove to be Trump voters. Given that the majority of Trump supporters in the state of Florida are Males ages 45+ this result cannot be factual. A much larger percentage of independent voters in this county would have to meet the exit poll criteria of being male registered voters over age 45 in this county.
