Sink leads in latest poll

According to a new Quinnipiac poll, Democrat Alex Sink holds a slight lead over Republican Bill McCollum in the race for governor.

The poll, which was released this morning, shows that Sink holds a 38 to 34 percent lead over McCollum. 25 percent were undecided.

"Ms. Sink's gender and the fact that she would be the state's first woman governor are working to her benefit," Peter Brown, assistant director of Quinnipiac's Polling Institute said in a statement. The poll shows McCollum being slightly favored by male- 39 to 37 percent- but Sink is leading 39 to 30 percent among female voters.

Brown also said McCollum's Republican label may be hurting him. "In Florida, as in much of the nation these days the GOP label is no necessarily a plus," he said.

Sink as governor would provide much needed balance in Florida state government. Right now both chambers of the legislature, the Governor and a majority of the cabinet are controlled by the Republican party. As our current CFO, Ms. Sink is the only statewide elected Democrat.

The poll of 1,245 FLorida voters was conducted from June 2-7 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points.
