Give a Damn

This month, as part of Cyndi Lauper's "Give A Damn" campaign, socially-conscious personalities Lily Tomlin, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Mae Whitman and Judith Light speak out against teenagers who commit suicide.

In September, there were four gay teen suicides as a result of school bullying:

Tyler Clementi

Friends of the Rutgers University freshman who leaped to his death after his roommate allegedly secretly filmed him during a "sexual encounter" in his dorm room and posted it live on the Internet are mourning the loss of Tyler Clementi who they say was an outstanding violinist with a big heart.

Clementi posted a goodbye message on his Facebook page just moments before jumping off the George Washington Bridge last week, an act that left friends such as Christina Guentert in shock and heartbroken.

"I am just devastated that this happened, especially to such an amazing person," Guentert wrote to ABC News in an e-mail. "Tyler was a remarkable person in many ways; he was always kind, generous, sweet, and loyal."

"He always had a smile on his face, and would joke around with me during class even on bad days," wrote Guentert, who went to school with Clementi for seven years in Ridgewood, N.J. "Tyler came off as innocent and sweet; the kind of person that you could rely on and go to for anything."

  • Seth Walsh, the Bakersfield, CA 13-year-old who hanged himself from a tree in his back yard after years of being bullied, died Tuesday afternoon after nine days on life support. Police investigators interviewed some of the young people who taunted Seth the day he hanged himself. “Several of the kids that we talked to broke down into tears,” Police Chief Jeff Kermode said. “They had never expected an outcome such as this.”
  • Asher Brown, 13, an eighth-grader killed himself last week. He shot himself in the head after enduring what his mother and stepfather say was constant harassment from four other students at Hamilton Middle School in the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District in Houston Texas. Brown, his family said, was “bullied to death” — picked on for his small size, his religion and because he did not wear designer clothes and shoes. Kids also accused him of being gay, some of them performing mock gay acts on him in his physical education class, his mother and stepfather said.
  • Billy (William) Lucas, 15, a student at Greensburg Community High School in Greensburg, IN, was found dead in a barn at his grandmother’s home Thursday evening — he had hanged himself. Friends say that he had been tormented for years. “He was threatened to get beat up every day,” friend and classmate Nick Hughes said. “Sometimes in classes, kids would act like they were going to punch him and stuff and push him. Some people at school called him names,” Hughes said, saying most of those names questioned Lucas’ sexual orientation.

This insanity must stop and all school districts must commit to making school safe for GLBT students.

Gay Bishop Eddie Long

In a mid-1990's sermon revealed on The Michelangelo Signorile Show, Long advocated the death penalty for gay people.

A 2007 Southern Poverty Law Center report described , Bishop Eddie Long, stands Long as, "One of the most virulently homophobic black leaders in the religiously based anti-gay movement."

Is it not obvious that the gayest thing one can do is be an anti-gay zealot?

Stay away from power lines and electrical wires.

Look before you step. Debris, such as broken bottles and nails, often cover the ground after a flood. Wear protective covering (boots, e.g.) on your feet at all times. Floors and stairs that have been covered with mud can be extremely slippery.
Clean every wet item. Floodwaters pick up sewage and chemicals from roads, farms, factories, and storage buildings. Therefore, flooded food, medicine, and cosmetics can be very hazardous.

Wilton Manors Mayor Gary Resnick's Statement On Adoption Ban Appeal

Mayor Gary Resnick said "As Mayor and President of the League of Cities, I've pushed for legislation to end our state's ban on gay adoption. We were the only state in the nation where adoptions were not judged on what's in the best interests of the child, but on the sexual orientation of the adoptive parents. I'm thrilled that a Florida appellate court found this ban unconstitutional and that the State will stop enforcing it. The real winners here are the children who need caring, loving homes."

Hundreds Gather for BSO Third Annual Patriots Day in Memory of 9/11

Broward County Mayor Ken Keechl Delivers Keynote Address

Broward County Mayor Ken Keechl joined members of the Broward Sheriff's Office and Fire Department at the Third Annual Patriots Day event in memory of those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on 9/11, and once again hundreds of people attended the event.

"It has been nine years. The time has gone by fast, but the memory does not fade," said Mayor Keechl as he addressed the men and women who gathered at the John R. Cochran Public Service Building . "As we gather here, we reinforce and practice the promise that 'We shall never forget.'"

Mayor Keechl spoke as the first bell sounded at 8:46 a.m., the exact time that American Airlines Flight #11 struck the north tower of the World Trade Center . Retired New York Police Department Inspector Ronald Wasson followed with remarks prior to the second bell at 9:03 a.m. the time that United Airlines Flight #175 struck the south tower of the World Trade Center at the 81st floor. Retired Fire Department of New York Lieutenant Michael "Mickey" Kross spoke just before the third bell sounded at 9:43 a.m. marking the time when American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon. At 10:05 a.m., the south tower collapsed and one minute later, hijacked United Airlines Flight 93 with 40 passengers and crew crashed into a field in Pennsylvania .

"What we must remember is that when America is under attack, we come together. Fear takes a back seat and honor prevails. Heroes emerge. In the heart and soul of every American lies a patriot. That's personified when we think about the passengers aboard Flight 93. Or the three firefighters who hoisted the American flag above the smoldering ruins of the World Trade Center . As Americans, you can't separate our soul from our soil," said Mayor Keechl.

In all, 2,998 innocent people perished on September 11, 2001, including 343 NYC firefighters, 23 NYPD officers and 37 Port Authority officers. To honor the memory of those who lost their lives, a donated piece of the World Trade Center steel was unveiled on September 11, 2009 and is on permanent display in the lobby of the Broward Sheriff's Office main headquarters, located at 2601 West Broward Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale .

Wilton Manors Takes Disciplinary Action Regarding Chief of Police

Wilton Manors City Manager Joseph L. Gallegoshas completed the investigation into emails sent by Police Chief Richard Perez. During the16-week period of April 20, 2010 through August 11, 2010, it was found that certain emails sent by the Police Chief during the course of operations contained inappropriate content.

The emails in question were determined to be in violation of City conduct standards and
policies contained in the City’s Personnel Rules and Regulations Section 12-15 Use of
the City’s Computer and Other Electronic Systems; and the Police Department Policy
112.1 Computer Systems and Electronic Communications.

Due to the derogatory, culturally insensitive and racially charged content of the emails,
the City Manager has imposed the maximum for Group III offenses, outside of
immediate separation, and will suspend the Chief of Police for 30 days without pay,
starting on Monday, September 20. During that time, the Chief will be required to
undergo racial and cultural sensitivity training and complete an effective management
development course identified by the City’s Human Resources Director. Any failure to
complete the recommended regimen will be cause for immediate separation.

Today, the City Manager and City Attorney, in accordance with City procedures,
conducted a pre-determination hearing with Chief Perez, prior to administration of
discipline or separation. During the hearing, Chief Perez apologized for his conduct,
admitted that he had “no excuses” for his actions, and if given an opportunity would
never repeat the violations and would work diligently to re-build the community’s trust.
“Law enforcement officers, by virtue of their responsibility to the community, must be
held to high standards of conduct and professionalism,” said Gallegos. “The City of
Wilton Manors expects its Chief of Police to continually earn the respect of the
community and the police department as a leader, mentor, disciplinarian and standard
bearer of exemplary values.”
