“The withdrawal of the United States from the Paris Agreement announced yesterday not only damages our country’s global reputation, it threatens to greatly complicate the significant climate challenges already facing Broward County and the state of Florida. For more than a decade, Broward County has created and implemented progressive practices and programs to address and plan for climate change. In 2009 we created the Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact with three of our neighboring counties. Just last month, Broward Commissioners adopted stronger planning requirements for new building projects and major redevelopments in anticipation of future changes to our land, water, infrastructure and environmental conditions caused by climate change. On Tuesday, I will bring forward a resolution that restates and reinforces Broward’s leadership as a county that has steadfastly addressed the impact of climate change in order to best protect our own residents and insure a sustainable and resilient environment for the future. We support all communities that place a priority on protecting the environment. When it comes to climate change I believe we should listen to our planet and not to the President,” Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief.
