(Washington) The U.S. Department of Justice announced new measures to prevent gun violence. In particular, the Department of Justice approved $1 million in emergency grant funding to Broward County and other local jurisdictions to help cover overtime costs incurred by local law enforcement agencies responding to the deadly mass shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
This announcement follows a joint letter sent by Congressman Ted Deutch (FL-22) and Senators Bill Nelson (D-FL) and Marco Rubio (R-FL) on February 28 to the Department of Justice requesting support to offset overtime costs. Following this announcement, Congressman Deutch issued this statement:
"This is a crucial grant for our community, and I'm thrilled that this money will be allocated quickly," said Congressman Deutch. "In the aftermath of the horrific mass shooting at Stoneman Douglas, many different local law enforcement agencies acted quickly and went above and beyond to help. This money will help cover some of the overtime costs incurred as these officers worked tirelessly to keep our community safe."
