School board will weigh in on gay marriage ban

The Broward County School Board will be the latest Broward government to vote on whether to oppose a proposed constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage.

The county commission last week voted to oppose the amendment, which will appear on the November ballot.

The School Board's resolution states that passing the amendment would "usurp power and authority traditionally reserved to local government to offer benefits and protections for its citizens beyond those mandated by state and federal law," and "the loss of domestic partner benefits could cause great harm to the education or the children of Broward County, as many [School Board] employees would be forced to leave Florida and seek employment providing said benefit."

The board is scheduled to take up the resolution at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
