Today, the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus condemned Attorney General Jeff Sessions’s decision to reverse existing Department of Justice policy, ignore decades of case law and take the position that federal law does not protect transgender workers from discrimination.
“It is a dark day in our nation’s history when those tasked with defending our civil rights open the door to government sponsored discrimination,” said Transgender Equality Task Force Chair Rep. Joseph P. Kennedy, III (MA-04). “Barely buried underneath the Attorney General’s empty assurances is a clear message to all Americans that this government will not defend them from hatred. And despite his protestations, decades of court decisions have made clear that sex discrimination laws still protect transgender people. As this Administration continues to attack the very idea that we are all worthy of protection, my colleagues and I on the Transgender Equality Task Force would like every transgender American to know that we stand with them and we will continue to fight back against these bigoted policies.”
The Co-Chairs of the LGBT Equality Caucus created the Transgender Equality Task Force in 2015 to lead the fight for transgender equality on Capitol Hill. Rep. Kennedy is the chair of the bipartisan task force.
