VIDEO: Rep. Deutch on Las Vegas Mass Shooting

Congressman Ted Deutch (FL-22), a senior member of the House Judiciary Committee, recorded a video statement after the mass shooting in Las Vegas that left over 59 people dead and over 500 injured. Click the image below to watch the video. A transcript of the video is below.

Congressman Ted Deutch: "Hi, it’s Ted. I just wanted to spend a minute before I head off to the Floor to vote to reflect upon what happened last night and the way we’re all feeling.

"We mourn for the lives lost in that tragic, horrific shooting in Las Vegas, and we pray for the families of those who lost loved ones and for the recovery of all who were injured. And we’re so grateful for the first responders and the doctors, nurses, and medical personnel who helped to save so many lives.

"But now the question is, what do we do with the feeling we have? The feeling that this is just another mass shooting, the next mass shooting. This is the worst in American history, but it hasn’t been that long since we said that about Orlando.

"We have a responsibility to do something. When people die from cancer, the natural reaction is to want to come together and vow to eradicate cancer. And we come together committed to do that because we want to stop our fellow Americans from dying.

"In this case, after a shooter kills over 50 people and injures 10 times as many, we have to vow to eradicate gun violence.

"Now, I know that some people are saying that now is not the time to talk about gun violence and politics. Well, if we can’t commit to taking action now, then when is the right time? Tell me when the right time is, so we can set a date and have that conversation. It’s nonsense.

"Everybody, I don’t care what your politics are, believes that when over 50 people are killed, that we ought to at least spend some time trying to figure out if there are steps we can take to prevent that from happening again.

"That’s what I’m advocating. And I know that a lot of my colleagues here want to have that debate. There’s no easy way to do this. There’s no quick law that we can pass tomorrow that will ensure that there will be no more tragedies like this. But we have to take action, and we have to do it together.

"From the 22nd District in Florida – from Boca Raton to Fort Lauderdale, Coral Springs and Parkland, and all of the cities in between – tonight, all of us just like people all around the country, are ‘Las Vegas Strong.’"

Congressman Deutch introduced the Buyback our Safety Act, legislation to create a pilot program at the Department of Justice aimed at bolstering local gun buyback initiatives nationwide. He co-introduced legislation (H.Res. 370) to require that a committee hearing be held whenever there is a moment of silence in the House for a tragedy involving gun violence.
