PIP Timing

Legislative leaders are looking at a special session to deal with the Oct. 1 sunset of the state's mandatory no-fault auto insurance law during the committee week scheduled for September 17-20.

The problem is there's another looming deadline -- Aug. 15th -- 45 days before Oct. 1, when the no-fault law is now scheduled to sunset. On Aug. 15th, auto insurers can start sending out new and cheaper (because they'll lack PIP coverage) insurance bills to policyholders who have Oct. 1 renewals, touting an auto insurance break.

That could make it politically difficult for lawmakers to mandate a new kind of auto insurance coverage in September, which would be a rate hike for those who got noticed of a rate reduction.
