A New Direction For America
As Congress enters the August recess, I wanted to take just a few minutes to update you on the activity of the 110th New Direction Congress led by a Democratic majority. During the past seven months, as promised, my colleagues and I have been making progress for the American people on the toughest challenges we face.
A few accomplishments of which I am particularly proud include:
- The first minimum wage increase in ten years.
- Oversight and accountability for the first time for the War in Iraq.
- Protection and expansion of children's health coverage.
- Hurricane relief to rebuild the Gulf Coast.
- Implementation the 9/11 Commission recommendations.
- Expansion of college aid.
- Increases for veterans' health care.
- Funding for new border patrol agents.
- Authorizing prosecution of gas price gouging and OPEC price fixing.
- Restoring Congressional oversight on all levels.
- Saving billions of taxpayer dollars and responsible spending.
- Exposing corruption and incompetence.
I personally introduced several amendments that were passed by the House of Representatives including:
- Funding of $1.9 million for a national windstorm program, saving lives and protecting property by studying and preparing for wind storms such as hurricanes and tornadoes (For a full report, CLICK HERE)
- Restoration of $3.5 million through the Ryan White Care Act to protect children from contracting AIDS through supportive neighborhood health clinics. (For a full report & video, CLICK HERE)
But we are not stopping there. In the coming months, I will be working hard to pass legislation that protects children from online predators, prevents childhood drowning, and expands access to insurance coverage. Also, I will continue to ensure that your tax dollars are returned to our community by securing funding for South Florida projects.
If I sound excited about our progress it is because I am! These are just a few of the many items that we have accomplished and these are just the first of many steps in our New Direction for a stronger and more secure America!
