Dale Holness accused of "Jamaican agenda''

Lauderhill Commissioner Dale V.C. Holness, a Jamaican real estate broker and one of five black candidates in the race for Broward County Commission District 9, is being accused of serving a "Jamaican agenda.''

Joe Major, an activist helping incumbent Albert Jones's campaign, is urging African-Americans not to vote for Holness, because of his alleged Jamaican bent. Here's one of the things Major said in a mass e-mail:

The few want-to-be political Jamaicans are very much known for being critical of Americans and Haitians we must not allow this kind of uncivilized, barbarc politicking to manifest here in America.

Holness said he speaks Spanish and Creole and easily crosses ethnic lines. He talks a lot about the need for Broward to engage in international trade with the Caribbean. But he said he knows as the commissioner in the only "safe black seat'' he'd be called upon by black residents all over Broward.

Holness said he started the Lauderdale Sister Cities Organization as well as that city's Chamber of Commerce

You'll see an article here about Holness and his alliance with Andrew Young, the civil rights activist and former congressman who touts a similar line about international trade with Brazil and Haiti.

In this video clip, Holness talks about trade with Haiti, and growing that market. He talks about the strength of trade with Brazil. He said China built a stadium in Jamaica and sent technical employees, helped finance it and even sent laborers -- things South Florida should be doing.
