Sen. Nelson and Reps. Wasserman Schultz and Deutch Tout Bipartisan Defense of Florida’s Coast atMonday Press Conference
In the face of increased drilling threats, Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) and Reps. Debbie Wasserman Schultz(FL-23) and Ted Deutch (FL-22) on Monday will discuss bipartisan efforts to protect Florida’s sensitive and economically vital coasts.
Thanks to Nelson and then-Sen. Mel Martinez (R-Fla), a no-drilling zone extends 125 miles off much of Florida’s Gulf Coast, and as far out as 235 miles at some points. That moratorium is in effect until 2022, but Nelson has filed Senate legislation to extend that moratorium for another five years. Wasserman Schultz and Rep. Vern Buchanan (FL-16) will introduce on Monday an identical House version of the legislation, which is expected to attract several bipartisan co-sponsors across Florida.
Nelson, Wasserman Schultz and Deutch will discuss at Monday’s event this legislation and other efforts to combat coastal drilling threats, including a response to President Trump’s executive order on coastal drilling.
